You don't see the heads of PlayStation saying timed exclusive titles they made deals with will be going to competitors consoles, do you? Like almost right after they struck the deal, they disclosed their exclusive terms. Just because the other team was crying foul. That was he moment that Tomb Raider lost the potential to be a console seller.

Usually, the timed exclusives on PS4 have been saying "First to Playstation" when announced. Phil said nothing about when RotTR was coming to PS4 or PC, that info was revealed by S/E. I'm sure that was more egged on by regret and pre-order numbers than anything.

Well, there you go. M$ probably lost interest in backing the game as exclusive, because the mess of spokesmen exchanges. The game became irrelevant to spend marketing money on. Square ruined the deal and Phil couldn't deny what the developer just said.

Its probably the game the least deserving of such low sales this year maybe even this whole gen. Its a very good game, released in a very bad time and amid very bad business practice.

It should not have been an exclusive and it should not have launched at this time. Summer 16 would have been the perfect release window.

Theres nothing wrong with 3rd party exclusives, but doing it at the expence of another userbase is silly. Its almost like penalizing you for not owning the right system. Whether its exclusive content or a game that was once was multiplatform now only on one platform. Its silly.

Unfortunately it had to have been MS that gets caught up in this shit. Sony do it all the time and have gotten away with it thus far.

How?

That's what happens when you release a game around the same time of 2 of the biggest blockbusters of the year

Currently most hyped for: FFXV and Zelda U

Once it hits ps4....

This game was never really going to sell that well. It was originally suppose to go up against Uncharted 4 and it dodge the uncharted 4 bullet just to be trample by Fallout 4. This game still has leg and is one of the big Holiday titles. Square Enix saved so much money on both development and marketing $$$ that were spent by Microsoft. Microsoft is using Rise of the Tomb Raider to promote Xbox One. All the money spent on this deal just come out of their Advertising budget.

Delaying the game out of the holiday window for a game that's ready to go ins't really the best move. Sure they would of sold much better if they release the game on both consoles but Square Enix would of had to spend more money on Advertising/development. Remains to be seen how much leg this game has for the rest of Holiday 2015.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Completely expected. It was just bad business practice after bad business practice.

The "exclusivity" reveal was a complete disaster. Leaving it's exclusivity so ambiguous with PR crap just pissed people off. Having the majority of the fanbase on the other platforms pissed people off. Both Microsoft and SE were bombarded with hate on public forums. Pre-orders were so low that SE practically hijacked the sales of the X1/360 versions by announcing the other versions before its release. Then they decided to release it in the busiest period of the year and in direct competition with Fallout 4.

Plenty of lessons to be learnt.

All I have to say is that I didn't feel betrayed and will buy the game when it comes to the PS4. The people who made it can't pay for the mistakes of the heads on their companies.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

Tomb raider (2013) had an opening week of ~430K on X360 and went on to sell 1.88 million. On PS4 it had an opening week of ~165K and went on to sell just over 1 million.

RoTR is looking like having an opening week of 220-250K so it's LTD is looking like something around 1.5 million. X360 looks like it will be about 1/3 of Xb one. So over all the game is looking to sell about 2 million on Xbox. 2.2-2.3 million including digital.

Considering SE regarded 4 million in sales of TR(2013) to be disappointing I don;t think they will be too pleased with RoTR sales on Xbox. But I don't think they will be too upset with reaching 2 million, eventually. However unless MS paid them $60-70 million+ for this exclusivity SE will be very glad that it's only a timed exclusive.

Word of mouth will save it. If not, Ps4/PC version will.

The game wouldn't need saving had the PS4 got the timed exclusive deal. That's in another alternate universe though. lol
