Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony may consider "options" for smartphone unit if no profit next year

Is the PlayStation brand the only "section/part" of Sony that is selling/doing great? But then again, the Psvita is part of the Playstation brand.

I think Sony should just follow what Xiaomi does. Dont bother with ads, dont bother with store distribution.

We are at the point that the ppl who want an Xperia will buy it directly from an online Sony store. This will allow the devices to be cheaper too since you are cutting out a big chunk of other spending areas that contribute to the overal price point of the phones.

I actually think Sony can keep Xperia going, even if only on a niche market, this way.

So kind of like OnePlus. If they sell unlocked snartphones at a lower price with similar specifications?  And ordered solely from an online store?

I can agree with that tbh. Give the customer a blank slate phone on which they can put the OS they choose, as well as service provider. Is that in a big company like Sony's nature? I kind of doubt it but if it did happen that would be great.

What actually went wrong with the Xperia Play?

The Xperia Play was a device forced on Sony due to their partnership with Ericsson. Sony did not want Ericsson having any part of the PlayStation unit, so they did not give the devices full PlayStation Network support. In fact, they created a whole new store called PlayStation Mobile, which they again, wanted nothing to do with.

The XP never saw any PS One games, PSP Games, or any SCEWWS games released on it. Even MLB The Show did not come out on the device. It was basically sent out to die.

Sony has never released a PlayStation Phone through Sony Computer Entertainment Incorperated (SCEI), the company branch that handles all PlayStation products. They need to merge Sony Mobile Comunications Inc. (SMCI) the Xperia division, into SCEI, and diliver a one Sony ecosystem. Right now they are working against each other, and that hurting both division substantially. Sony needs to focus on it's PlayStation OS's, and PlayStation Network services, bringing them above or on par with Google, Apple, and Microsoft.

when you put it like that... it actually makes alot of sense.

I think they should do the same, plus I wanna see what a phone would look like if left in the hands of SCEI, with focus on gameing experiance.

if its not making them profit and keeps losing them money on a regular basis then they should drop it

Hey Sony, I'd gladly buy an Xperia if you'd fucking let me. U.S. availability has been spotty at best and that's insane. As far as hardware goes they make the best phones in the world but they won't gain any traction in the market until they commit to marketing them properly.

P.S. I 100% disagree with the idea of a Playstation phone.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

There is no way they should move away from Android. They would have to invest a lot of money to develop their own OS, and spend lots more on trying to convince developers to makes apps for their app store. Even Microsoft with all of their money and clout is having a very hard time getting any market share with Windows phones.

Making a "gaming" phone is also a horrible idea. Outside of the people on these forums, no one would care for that. To prove my point, the 3DS has sold 54 million units in about 3.5 years. Apple has sold 47 million phones in the last 3 months (that's 0.25 years). Obviously the dedicated phone market is a much better market to compete in. Their phones already support Playstation Now and Remote Play (in addition to all of the Android games), which is good enough in my opinion.

Sony needs to reach out to all of the national carriers, and make them deals that they cannot refuse, so that they carry the Sony line (although this should be done without selling the phones at a loss).

I think they make great devices, and they need to find a way to get them into customers hands. I am sure that most people who try them out would switch on their next hardware upgrade cycle.

Dont know anyone who has an xperia device and a playstation. Excluding myself. I have a PS3 but I have a limited interest in playing playstation on phones. Going away from android is stupid. Windows phone is a failure. Sony has not the ressources to make their own phone os on the level of android. Sony should advertise their phones more and make better deals with the us carriers atleast in europe.xperia.devices are pretty big. And in the USA it fails as people have no idea thst those phones exist or their carrier just does not offer it.

Sony phones do have the hardware and the software to compete with any other manufacturer. And often surpasses them nobody can compete with the compact line of sony. Nobody has a better product in this size range.

People really has a bad taste... Sony makes one of the best smartphones imo!
And don't forget that they revolutionized the mobile market with Sony Ericsson a decade ago.

Lol,  a decade a go, yeah right .  They need to move forward not backward. They need to realize the werent the same anymore. Even as Playstation Fan, i'am not interested to buy SONY mobile phone product.

I'm really pathetic and have no friends. Please excuse the trolling message that used to be here, I don't know any better.
