Forums - Gaming Discussion - Apple A9X: The Mobile Processor That Outperforms a Wii U?

 

Some of the benchmarks are starting to come out of the vanilla Apple A9 processor and it appears to be quite beastly. The A9X in the iPad Pro then it would seem probably is a good deal better than the Wii U/PS3/360. Looks like we're definitively crossing the threshold of that gen graphics and now the march begins to match PS4/XB1 levels. 

 

Gotta wonder if that A9X chip could be in the AppleTV next year but it's amazing how much Apple and PowerVR are improving every year in the processing power department. 

I would not honestly mind if the NX is basically just a chip like this, this is roughly 15x more powerful than a Vita. Not only that but the A9X has a monstrous amount of memory bandwidth for a portable device at 50GB/sec. 

I have to wonder if at 960x540 resolution if it could maybe even handle PS4 engine ports. Of course not many devs will try.

I ain't even gonna go close to an ipad game if the game causes the ipad/tablet to overheat. I can't imagine something that thin could efficiently run a ps3/wii u game with minimal heat.

Anywho, no controller = no gaming for me



Let's wait for some benchmarks before we can make any hard claims ...

I'd like to see an A9X level chip in the portable itself. If they use a tablet form factor the thermal heat issue should not be a factor, it does work in the iPad Pro after all and while Nintendo's version wouldn't be that large, it would certainly be likely 2x-3x thicker because you need some grip to a gaming device.

LOL it's not like that is hard! But still very impressive performance.

It will be about half as strong as an X1. But again, not saying much.

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

I have to wonder though if you cut down a game resolution to 960x540 (Vita resolution), that's 1/4th the pixels of 1080P and it's bandwidth of 50GB/sec ... that's more than 1/4th of the PS4's GDDR5 RAM (140GB/sec effective approx).

You also have to take into consideration of things like fixed function units and GPU features ...

Yeah but it does start to become an open ended question. If only there was a game company willing to make a game tailored processor using mobile tech like this (cough* Nintendo *cough). 



This is only meaningful if devs can code to the metal and send direct commands to the gpu and cpu.
