Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Sony taking a loss for 2015 be worth it in 2016?

On a cheat day, are you more likely to eat pizza or ice cream?

Pizza 108 48.65%

Ice Cream 38 17.12%

I'm vegan so I only eat grass 17 7.66%

I produce my food via photosynthesis 23 10.36%

What is food; game is life 36 16.22%

Total:222

Wait are you talking about year or holiday season? Because in 2015 as a whole I'd say Sony has won, we've already gotten or about to get 3 AAA games this year with uncharted collection, tearaway unfolded, disagree, dragon quest, tales of zesteria coming. Even rocket league as console exclusive for now like rise of the tomb raider xD

US =/= World

Everywhere else they will vastly outsell Xbox without even having to try. Plus COD/Battlefront marketing deals will go a long way to keeping them competitive even against Halo in the US.

Wasn't really refering to sales. But with a Halo/Forza coming out I don't really expect to compete solely on bundles. Even worldwide. At least PS4 won't outsell Xbone as much as it has been so far.

The only way that Microsoft can catch-up if it actually sells more which worldwide wouldn't be the case. Not at all with the 3rd party (Japanese and/or marketing) exclusives + Uncharted collection. Sony will still move away but just a bit slower for a few weeks

All I can say is never underestimate the power of Metal Gear Solid, Call of Duty, and Star Wars.

Personally, I think the "Microsoft has an unbeatable fall line-up" is mostly just a slogan that Microsoft is espousing that Sony has made no effort to contradict, and has even supported with stupid PR statements.

Realistically, Tomb Raider is a timed exclusive, and while it will help move Xboxes, I am unsure how strongly in favor of Xbox the timed exclusivity will help it. It will definitely help Xbox, don't get me wrong, and I'm unsure how well known it will be that Rise of the Tomb Raider is timed.

Forza sells well, but it doesn't sell that well, and it's uncertain if its annual franchise-ization has led to series fatigue. The sales numbers indicate its possibility, but again, it's uncertain.

Fable Legends is on PC and free-to-play. I doubt it will move units.

As I see it, the core of Microsoft's line-up is Halo 5, through and through. Halo 5 will sell exceptionally well and move a ton of Xboxes, but there's uncertainty there, too. Halo 4 saw a huge drop-off in its online userbase after little more than a week. If the same thing happens to Halo 5, there could be trouble. I personally don't believe this is as likely to happen, because it seems apparent that 343 is making an extremely conscious effort to make Halo 5 extremely appealing, but it is still a risk.

The last thing I would mention is that it might be best to keep Xbox sales expectations in check. Last year, Microsoft managed to sell almost 75% of its annual units in the September to December months. It achieved this, at least heavily in part, due to its amazing sales during the holiday shopping season. But, whereas 500 dollars was considered the default price of an Xbox One for most of 2014, 350 dollars and a game is the default price for 2015. It would be difficult and highly costly to make a similarly incredible sale for 2015. Despite the appeal of Halo 5, I don't think it's likely we're going to see unbelievable sales percentage spikes for the Xbox One, outside of the week Halo 5 comes out.

DUH, liesten to this guy. We are walking into a holiday season that includes the insanely hyped and (rightfully) anticipated return of Star Wars. This may very well turn out to be one of, if not the single, biggest sellers this holiday season. For that claim, I point everyone in the direction of how well Arkham Knight sold. Factoring in how 3rd party titles and they accompanying bundles sell on/with PS4, that game could be a difference maker.

Thanks for pointing that game out.

They won't be taking a loss seeing as how they have already sold more consoles than MS and will continue to sell more globally this fall. How many times will this thread get made?

Sony is well ahead on exclusives that's released already and scheduled to release this year so far. Where's the loss for sony? I'm sure sony will do a temporary price cut for the holidays and that will destroy the xbox one's sales.

this plus third party deals (it outsold MS last year when they had COD and AC on THEIR side so 2 swing votes there)

Sony ps4 exclusives kind of suck this year to be honest. 2016 looks better with uncharted 4 and street fighter 5. I don't have faith in TLG or Horizon being released next year given sony's track record.

Indies and old games being ported. Yay.

I think in the case of Sony games, unexpected delays are to be expected. :|

Possibly. But you can't think that Sony didn't want to counter a Forza or Halo game.

As a Sony fan I think some of you are underestimating the power of Halo. That game sells consoles.

Halo would be unbeatable anyway in its launch window in USA and UK. Sony hasn't almost unlimited funds as MS, so, if it can keep the WW leadership by a large lead anyway, it's better for it to maximize profits even sacrificing US market share for one or two quarters, launching as many of the biggest first party titles as possible when the user base will be larger. Not to mention that AMD switch to 14nm process is planned for next year, then Sony will be able to make the first low-power version of PS4, maybe the Slim, and save money both on the new chips and clearing the last supplies of the older chips for the last batches of the original PS4 version. Not rushing the big launches, Sony can also extend PS4 life. And if the first PS4 version with the 14nm APU were already the Slim, not only all the new sales would enjoy even larger cost savings, but the sales boost, coupled with big game launches, would be really huge, and possibly able to make PS4 more relevant in Japan too, where it's still struggling to reach Wii U LTD sales.
So IMVHO the answer is yes, the sacrifice in 2015 should be worth it in 2016.
One last thing: conceding MS some success in its favoured markets can prevent a dangerous price war.
