Nintendo never wins even when they win. Didnt you know that?

The point is they WON. The only Nintendo console in that list that is still developed for is... Well, none of them. Only the XB360 still has software regularly released for it on that list

What are you talking about? Nintendo sold 250 milions of consoles last generation, period. Just because they have a bad generation now doesnt mean they are irrelevant or just because Wii appeal to the casual market doesnt mean it didn´t won.

What does any of this have to do with being iconic though? Didn't we already establish that hardware sales do not translate into being iconic?

I don't understand why people are still arguing hardware sales.

PS: Gran Turismo is huge in Europe, was already back in the 90's. My older sister's friends used to come over to play on my PS1 and even my dad loves the GT series.

Don´t read it out of context, read the entire conversation, it has nothing to do with that. It starts with "Nintendo stronger than Sony in America? Plz dude, plz..." and the argument was sales.

nintendo is more iconic on handhelds, sony on home consoles.

but nintendo is more iconic also on characters. 30 years with new games of same characters. if sony just kept keeping crash games over gens...

Unless they change their current marketing structure, no. Playstation as a brand won't be iconic nor valuable as Nintendo. I'm assuming that this is their intentional choice, as Nintendo's brand value is hurting them much as it brings them the profit.

It's a different kind of icon, Nintendo remade the gaming industry (at least for the home console market) back in the 80's with the NES... they are the only truly relevant player in the portable, they were on the console scene 10 years before Sony, obviously franchises like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, etc. are still very popular!

Sony took the market by storm with the original PXS (an amazing piece of hardware for its time)... They have their own franchises, but they are not going to wake up the child in you in the same manner (Drake is no Mario...).

However, since Sony has been an option, there never was a time when a Nintendo console was my main gaming device, not once...

And despite owning both consoles, I couldn't tell you that last time I played them. They've been irrelevant for 3 years now.

You're not still arguing hardware sales? I did read the entire conversation, my point is that there shouldn't even be a context when it comes to hardware sales as we already established that hardware sales alone do not make an icon.
Unless we want to start praising Apple as the greatest icon in gaming, that is.

The topic is also in relation to NOW, not last year or the year before. What did Nintendo do this year? Released Splatoon, lost E3, and lost Iwata. Oh, and they shot their own sales in the foot by confirming the NX.

No. If you talk to nongamers, they know who Mario is, they know Nintendo. That's not the case with Playstation and the franchises on the Playstation.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

No, the topic is about being ICONIC, not about being a trend, something is not iconic from one day to the other, it takes years and decades to become iconic, and you are trying to say that Nintendo is less iconic because they sell less right now wich makes no fucking sense. Iconic =/= "a la mode"

(And what the hell has Iwata death to do with this??! Jesus...)

Lol! His response has nothing to do with the word "iconic". That's priceless. I think people should at least look up the word before posting.
