Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony financial results Q1 FY15, 663 million $ profit, PS4 ships 3 million

So, PS4 shipments more than combined Nintendo + Microsoft shipments!

Do what? 300K up YoY. Wow that sucker is really selling lots outside of Japan and USA where the independent trackers have a pretty tight handle on sales.

Dat mobile phone division. It's a millstone and it needs to be managed and not propped up by the profitability of the other divisions. TV is even becoming more profitable, with lower sales but higher operating income. Phone gets hit with a big negative FX impact, in fact the FX impact is larger than the operating loss.

That was always going to be the case, but unless Nintendo unexpectedly ships a lot more than what NPD and MC numbers (being Wii U's biggest single markets) imply, the Market share for the quarter will be looking like 65%. That's really getting up there.

So while missing the final week of the FY on VGC, we can guess at about 170K coming off the Batman launch week. So that puts VGC sell through at 23.9-23.95 million. So 1.4-ish mission in the retail channel. At the rate PS4 is selling that's a pretty reasonable tracking job. Certainly no hint at all of overtracking. Even iff the end of June numbers get bumped up 200K or so that still keeps the shipped vs sell through difference pretty reasonable. So at least the interminable wait for sales numbers over the last few months has been compensated with pretty decent estimates for PS4 at least.

almost 3 times the shipments of the XB1. which after taking out 360 shipments would be roughly 1.1 million or so.

and they still havent given the damn thing a price drop yet.

Sony shipped more than they did at this period last year without a price cut. That is just nuts. There is still a price cut incoming sometime but I wonder if these results will make Sony delay it until next year. We'll also see if Morpheus is able to help ship more untis. Finally, they still have the slim card to play.

The way I see the price drop situation:

PS4 has about 70-90% of the market everywhere outside the US. And even there, it is ahead most of the time and in total.

So if they were to ramp up the US competition by dropping the price, they would most likely need to drop it everywhere which is not needed at all at this moment. So I think they will push on this holiday season at the same price with assistance of strong multiplat marketing muscle, and wait until next year to go cheaper.

(Of course, the $399 price will now be a 1TB console, and we can see some "temporary price cuts" on occasional weekly basis).

And this YOY jump just shows the power of strong multiplat offers (Mortal Kombat, Witcher, Batman) without need to rush 1st party games.

i doubt they would wait this full year without another price drop. a 50$ price drop by paris game week seems pretty reasonable. would boost sales a lot in the holidays and post holidays. i bet at 350$ PS4 hardware would still be making a profit. having a third holiday at the same price point would just be insane.

Lol, Vita not even shown anymore...so bad Sony?

Still very good quarter for Sony, for gaming as well as the company as a whole. Really didn't expect PS4 shipments to be up YoY.
