what is the difference between Persona and SMT though? in terms of sales and gameplay?

Persona is more upbeat and psychological while SMT is more atmospheric and dark. If you like anime you'll like Persona more and if you like story more go for SMT. Gameplay-wise there's more to do in Persona games, SMT plays much more traditionally. In both you collect demons (called Shadows in Persona) but the difference is battle systems comes from Persona having a card game at the end to colect demons while you negotiate with demons during battle in SMT.

Sales wise Persona sells more, each iteration getting closer and closer to 1 million while SMT has stayed niche

SMT is played on the 3ds

Persona is played on the Vita/PS3/PS4

I spent 120ish hours playing SMT - I've not yet started Persona - between bravely default, SMT, Etrian Oddessy Millenium Girl, Conception2 - I needed a break from super long RPGs...

So I started a little title called Disgea 3 (having no idea - seriously) - and now I have Disgea 4, Persona, and 2 new Etrian games waiting for me when I re-surface...  Oh and Bravely Default 2 is due out next year along with the new SMTxFE and FE fates - it's not a horrible place to be as someone who loves RPGs...

Luckily though BOTH franchises are selling more. SMT IV sold almost 300k more than SMT III (Nocturne)

Both franchises are pretty niche, but I feel as though Persona is going to go mainstream after Persona 5 releases. As for SMT, I think if V is on the Wii U's successor and is advertised pretty well, it could break 1m.

Well deserved. Great game.

Really good sales for a SMT game.

Just curious as to whether these numbers are physical only or includes digital too (since its digital only in PAL territories).

Also, this game is constantly on sale here so that could definitely help its sales but not really its profitability.

thanks. yeah my sony friend really wanted me to play persona and disgea series.  On the 3Ds i play to buy bravely default, smt and etrian if my wallet permits.  I'm currently playing FE: Awakening and it is really a great game, a turn-based. which is really a tactical one which i really like.

maybe that is why Persona became a more wide known game due to being upbeat and it is in the playstation.  will check further SMT and Persona videos and i'll try to put in my wish list this year.

Well, actually it's played on a variety of formats :p it's just the most recent iterations hitting the 3DS. Hopefully it might return to home consoles with NX (if this really is a handheld/home console hybrid). :D

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I wasn't aware of how much better SMT 4 did compared to 3. Well that's good and well deserved sales. And yeah P5 will probably break main stream once it comes out. SMT is a harder sale but I think it could too if advertised good enough, or at least break 1mil
