Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Realistically, how powerful can Nintendo's next handheld & console be if they release at $199.99 each?

Slightly worse than XBO for home console if smart parts were chosen. Moderately more powerful than Vita if the right parts are chosen. The way Nintendo builds hardware though probably means the 'right' parts won't be chosen.

The PS4 launched in 2013 and was profitable from day one so I think it could easily be more powerful than PS4 if it released in 2017.

I just don't think that the console will be at $199. I'm thinking it will be around $299-349 with power on par or maybe even surpassing PS4. But the handheld? I can definitely see it going for $199 and should be more powerful than the Vita. But power won't be the thing that moves either console. It will be the ability to play both handheld and console games on the same device with cross platform play.

Miyamoto recent:

"What we are always striving to do is to find a way to take novel technology that we can take and offer it to people at a price that everybody can afford. And in addition to that, rather than going after the high-end tech spec race and trying to create the most powerful console, really what we want to do is try to find a console that has the best balance of features with the best interface that anyone can use."

"But really what's most important to us is, how do we create a system that is both unique and affordable so that everyone can afford it and everyone can enjoy it."

Also he said that they fail with Wii U in order to have more affordable price.

All that doesn't look to me like PS4 power at $299-349, more like less power than Xbox One at around $249 price point.

I won't buy a cheap and uninteresting console I don't want. I will buy a console that I am interested in playing.

Why you think it will be uninteresting console?

For me it's always easier to buy affordable than not affordable console. :)

If they make a console less powerful and less feature complete so that it can be cheaper, then it will be uninteresting to me at 200 than it would if they made a much more powerful and feature landed box at 500. Given the choice, I will buy the expensive one, but probably won't bother with the cheap one.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

The PS4 released at $400. In 2016/2017 it will probably retail for more that $200 (the guideline stipulated by the OP.) With inflation, this difference is slightly more pronounced. I can't see them making a profitable console for $200 that is more powerful than the PS4 in 2016/2017.

Well Wii was less powerful and affordable console and wide opinion is that was very interesting console. But it seem you want a power house from next Nintendo console..

Apple is selling the new iPod touch for $199 (the same A8-SoC as in the iPhone 6, 1136x640 resolution, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB flash memory) and they don't sell hardware without a big profit margin: https://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/

http://www.imore.com/ipod-touch-2015-review

So the NX-handheld could be in that performance area.

Good point. The A8 outperforms the Vita by a mile too on a higher res display. Keep in mind too the NX is like 16 months out from launch too ... what they could probably get in this price range could very well be more comparable to the A9 chip coming this fall.

Also since Nintendo likely will go for a lower resolution (ish) screen (1280x720 perhaps) ... such a chip could really cook in a portable.

Not really, look at the games on the vita they look better than top of the line smartphones. The vita has 4 GPU processors

I started with the atari and moved to the nes then snes went to sega for awhile then ps1, ps2, xbox 360-PS3-Wii
now my gf has the Wii U and I have gone totally to pc but I play the Wii U with her once in awhile. While I love nintendo as a kid as many do rightly so they need to learn to make more mature games that hold on to us kids as we grow old I can tell you after 30 years of mario I am defiantly burnt out on the likes, I know i know everyone loves mario yes i did as a kid but now that I am 35 I want more than just mario, zelda, samus I am older I have a job which means more money to buy games with and 1 or 2 games a year is just not enough for me they really need to nail down more 3rd party content or make more games that focus on us older people who have the money they want I would love to dump money on new games for my gf's Wii U but it doesn't have any games they center too much on only kids games (lets be honest here they say family friendly but how often do you see your parents jump into a game with you and have as much fun as the kid does?) so to sum up my wall of text because it's super late here and I am tired they need more 3rd party content and they need to focus on servicing the old crowd not just the kids who then grow up and want the AKA big boy toys know what I mean?

That is what I been saying. They have lost the adults. They need ot start retaining the kids when they turn to teens. That is how they will grow their size again with core gamers and then be able to increase 3rd party game sales..

That depends of what is, if it is a home console definitely much more stronger than Wii U, if it is a some hybrid device probably little stronger than WiiU, if it is a handheld probably weaker than Wii U.
