Forums - Website Topics - VGC needs a better, dedicated mobile site.

I am happy for this thread to exist, but remember to put suggestions like this in the TruckStop thread as well.

There are mods better placed to delve into the details if they so choose - but I believe this is in the works. Broadly, we're going more for incremental change I think, rather than a huge delay followed by a big bang with a multitude of changes.

My next thread will be suggestions on how the front page should be laid out. Should I just post those ideas in the TruckStop thread instead?

Yea, VGC on mobile isn't the best so that is why I only use it when I have a computer or laptop

Well a lot could be done with the current front page:
There are now three columns - Articles - Charts - Forums. This makes it hard to navigate on a small screen. This could "easily" be reduced to two columns or even one.
Articles appear on two places as "Latest Stories" and "Latest Articles" Why is this?
Articles get views but selldom any comments. Could articles somehow merge with forum threads?
Then there is the stuff from Gamewise, Zergnet and N4G - I guess it has to be there.

This is a complete must. I haven't owned a PC or laptop for two years now so ice always used my Uogine for browsing this site, and while I've managed to get by I've always thought to myself that it could do with a site for mobile phone users. Also when they put them ANNOYING advertisements that take up the whole screen or open up the App Store automatically.

An entirely new mobile site is, along with an overhaul of the desktop site, on the cards somewhere down the road, but for the time being the best we can do is work on improving the functionality of the existing site.

In order to change the site in any meaningful way design wise, we would need to re-code from scratch because the codebase currently in use relies heavily on old modules and scripts, updating these scripts to utilize new features and proper CSS3 integration results in the current site breaking in multiple places.

There are a few more reasons why we can't put into effect a massive overhaul just yet but those are best left off the forums.

The last and most important factor here is that neither me nor trucks get paid for the time we put into the sites coding and thus our normal jobs put a damper on how much time we can actually spend working on the site, since any time spent cuts directly in to our own personal free time, I can't speak for trucks here as I'm unaware of the hours he works but for me it's a 60 hour work week (mon-sat), Sunday and late evenings is the only time I have to myself and it's currently being spent on working with the current codebase.

Well I hope you love your job because a 60 hr week is criminally abusive employment unless you are in it for love and you do it voluntarily.

I'm using it on my phone right now and it's OK, lol. But yeah, a mobile site is in development.

It's coming. It looks pretty good. Just be patient! It's not as easy as you might think or wish to believe...

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

The only way to use this site on mobile is via opera mini because it safes you from all the mobile ad crap that sometimes even directly opens the playstore to download a totally useless app. And of course it also saves you a lot of bandwidth which the site is quite heavy on.

I'm not saying it's easy. I was only starting a discussion. Especially on the layout. Jizz also posted a picture of what I assume is a revamped VGC Buddy, which I hope is a correct interpretation, because it would be a step in an icredibly right direction.

More on that in my other thread, though. But ass a general suggestion, I think the Youtube website gets it pretty perfect. I'd use that as a template.

I'll expand upon my Youtube mobile site comparison tomorrow.
