I still can't believe how seriously people are taking this.

There is nothing wrong with this comment...at all. He was asked a question then he answered it, thats how an interview works.

The benefits of the Xbox as a long term business strategy have yet to be proven worthwhile. Until it is proven worthwhile its just a lot of hot air. Basically the people arguing that Reggie's comment is wrong because of the "strategy" are saying "Well Reggie is wrong about this because the plan was for it to be more effective and even though it hasn't been super effective yet we should all pretend that it will be in the future."

Reggie's comment is made in the hear and now, and as of right now this whole thing looks pretty horrible from a shareholder's view....particularly the RRoD issues and the warranty payouts, the recent fall in sales, and the rise of PS3 sales etc... If I was a shareholder I would consider this to be a pretty ugly scenario. I don't doubt MS has a plan and/or an ace up the sleeve but a regular shareholder won't know anything about it.

I would agree with this.  MS's goal in the first place was to integrate Windows into every living room.  The entire Xbox project was designed as a trojan horse.  At this point in time, it would be good to present a different plan to the investors.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

You would think that the way Google is kicking Microsoft ass they didn't have to pick a fight with Sony on top :P

I think the real issue is Microsoft failed to foresee Google and decided to get into the gaming business thinking their software business was safe...
And now they are up to their ankles in fights on both sides...

Exactly. While they were busy fucking up the Playstation they couldn't stop Google taking over the Internet and Apple taking over digital media (and both soon taking over mobile computing). Despite the Xbox, despite XBox Live, Live, Vista and all their other new ideas, Microsoft is today in a weaker position with consumers than it was 5 years ago.

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

Both Microsoft and Sony are significantly weaker than what they were five years ago. The question is who is worse off? No one can really say at this moment.

All I see here is people trying to scare others into thinking its over for their company. Nobody has any proof MS is in anymore peril than Sony, just theories, speculation and wishful thinking.

It's a pity Sony and Microsoft couldn't follow Nintendo's example and do business in a matter that isn't only profitable, but insanely profitable, even the PS2's lifetime profits were less than what the Wii has made in a two quarter period (six months). You can argue who has the Halos, who has the Grand Theft Autos, who has the Metal Gear Solids, who has the Devil May Crys and who has the Final Fantasies... but Nintendo is the only one of the big three not in any threat of financial trouble down the road or struggling to make their console break even. Nintendo is the only company with any real security and no dark clouds over the horizon. Nintendo couldn't compete in the market as it was so they simply changed it, they changed it with the Wii and Ds and have single handedly reshaped Japan's market and slowly are reshaping the rest of the world. I can't see into the future. I don't have a crystal ball. But I can assure you that Nintendo is the only one of the three companies with a business model that has any garanteed future in gaming.

Onimusha,
I totally agree with your position on Nintendo. I hope you didn't refer to me when you said some people want to make Sony look better by talking down Microsoft or vice versa. Sony's problem is entirely by its own making. I don't know if it was more Kutaragi's or Microsoft's influence, but it was Sony who decided to launch an over-engineered console at twice the launch price of its predecessor. Had the PS3 launched with half the power and features at $299 Sony would still be the market leader today.

The question who is worse off is really hard to decide, first since Sony is a hardware company and Microsoft is a software company, and second because Sony is beaten by the competition (Nintendo) now but has won competitions in video gaming and other markets many times before -- while Microsoft is still firmly holding onto one of the most profitable monopolies in history (Windows+Office+Server) but inspite of all its money has never ever won in an open market competition. I think despite Microsoft being in a better financial position Sony will show more business acumen and endurance.

Clearly he would say this.

But I disagree, because the division is now profiting, and it's a very small part of the Microsoft empire if you're a serious shareholder. Microsoft shares have been climbing all year long.

I've never heard of "Reggie" before. Who is he? What games has he developed?
And what it's his comment?

(I can't read the first page, it's all white)

I think this would have to be the first time I've 100% agreed with you. Well said.

While I don't see either Sony or MS heading the way of Sega, Nintendo is the only one of the three with a current model that has a prospective guarantee in the market. Whether I like it or not, Nintendo is/has dramatically changed the market.

Reggie... or anybody for that matters, should shut up about other company's business, especially if you don't have anything constructive to say.

Saying Microsoft's xbox isn't an 'smart idea' is just asking to get yourself disrespected by gamers.

Oh so what you mean is that he should shut up if he doesnt have anything to say that is completely positive? What if the TRUE answer to the QUESTION HE WAS ASKED (remember he didnt just say this out of nowhere, he was asked) is inherently negative?

People expecting him to respond with some political BS need to can it. How about you go over interviewing 101 and realize that this is a Q and A. He is asked a question and he answers, this isnt a presidential race, so he can leave the BS at home. His answer was honest, and furthermore, his answer was TRUE. The Xbox endeavor has dug a massive hole money wise. In the BILLIONS. Shareholders would 100% agree with Reggie on what he said, and that you cannot deny, its just the truth. Just because it isnt positive doesnt mean Reggie shouldnt answer it honestly.
