Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What is the truth about Hololens and backwards compatility?

After watching both Sony and MS E3 events, both we're better for different reasons. MS showed off stuff that will be out this year, including a pretty cool new controller and BC. Sony revealed some amazing stuff, but we will be waiting 'til next year year for most (2 years in some cases).

I love VR and what's being showed. Morpheus is getting it right IMO it just works. I'm trying to get hyped for hololens but some things aren't just sticking right with me, for instance,  the last few times they showed off hololens, they showed it from a 3rd perspective. I want to view it from the person using it. Why are they not showing this? It seems that they are only showing it in controlled conditions to make it look better than it actually is (kind of like Kinect).

I know it's an early product, but if they can't put something together with a prototype that they can go all out on in expense, what hope will a $200/$300 device have?

Second thing that doesn't seem right is BC. Cool, I think this is a great addition... then I thought about it a little. 15 games at launch??? 100 games by holiday???  It's actually quaite a small sample from the entire library. If 360 gamers get a X1 for BC, it might be to late to go back when they realise that only 1 out of 10 of their 360 games is BC supported. It's a great addition if you know exactly what you're going to get or you already own a X1. But the average casual gamer could be fooled by this. MS know this and they know websites, TV and radio will just report the X1 having BC. Even listening to Radio 1 (One of the biggest radio stations in the UK, biggest for the young adults) they were making it sound like the X1 had full BC.

So what is the truth? Will Hololens do what they show in an effective way like they show? Was BC devised to fool casual gamers?

Well, its not like its gonna stop at 100 games and be like "thats it". They are for sure going to eventually get majority of the games on there and while it will take some time to do that, it certainly is better than the alternatives, specially since it seems like the x1 might run a few games better than the 360. Edit: So while it may be clunky at the start, I think it will be great by the end of it

As for Hololens, yea I will wait for version 2

I wouldn't bet on it. It takes time, money and permission from publishers.

Edit: Besides, it's almost 2 years in to the 8th gen, every passing month they keep expanding the library, BC will get less and less important. When interest dies down, do you think they will keep expanding?



They can't show it in first-person as you are not wearing the device. If you were you'd be seeing a first person perspective. To get around this and to see (more or less... emphasis on more here) what that person is seeing, they're using a camera which can see what they're seeing from the camera-man's perspective. The hololens doesn't have the capability to record and transmit that data which is why they use that HUGE camera setup to do all that.

As we've all heard the FOV is limited on the hololens, but that doesn't mean it's not some insanely cool device. Every journalist who has tried it has said it's crazy and awesome (aside from the FOV issue).. I think it's really amazing what they've done and if they can fix the viewing angles or open that out I think they're on to a winner.

BC is dependant on games developers / publishers giving the go ahead. MIcrosoft writes a wrapper, does some testing and then ships it out. That may mean that some games are never supported but it's better having that option than no option at all.

HoloLens is a self-contained devices with for the lack of a better description "a PC inside of it". And it must be a pretty highly powered PC with very optimized power consumption (as the space to fit in batteries is tiny). Additionally there are lots of sensors inside and projectors that create the AR picture etc.

So in my opinion it will be $1000+, maybe even significantly more.

HoloLens reportedly has a smaller field of view than the camera feed indicates, people who had hands on report the space in which you can see the "hologramms" is about the size of an ipad at pretty much arms length - outside of that they are invisible.



Hololens is augmented reality, it's technology that already exist and has been used in the Vita already, what they are doing it putting into a device that more than just gamers will want, it's just at E3 why are you going to show the features that would bore gamers?

They are, it's the same thing as in the end it's just a projection on a surface for us to see. So whether the surface is our TV or the surface is the hololens glasses, it's the same thing. You won't truely know until you use it yourself, just like VR. My issue with the fact they are calling it a hologram, it's not.

I don't buy it. If they can rig a camera, I'm sure they can tap into the video feed of the Hololens. That's relatively low tech stuff.

And yes BC is a cool addition.



Forget Hololens as a gaming consumer device. Gamers are way to price consicious and Hololens will be very expensive. MS is not really targeting gamers with Hololens but instead targeting the entertainment and business industries where it makes more sense.

As for BC, its a nice feature if you are someone who likes to continue to playing your old library of games. Its not a game changer but it does make the X1 a nicer console to own because it has this capability with any extra price. The library will continue to grow and you have the option to tell MS the games you want to see the most so they do not waste time with stuff nobody cares about. Also all of MS games will be BC so that should be something. The other thing that I like is that BC is not restricted to just retail games but also Arcade. I still play a lot of my Arcade games and it would be great to just see them pop up for me to downloand and play on my X1.



You cant see anything about VR. Without actually putting on a VR it looks like you are just looking at any regular game trailer. Thats going to be VR's toughest sell. It was impressive the way Microsoft showed off Minecraft to the public.
