Forums - General Discussion - Tips for cheap travel?

So I am thinking of traveling in a year and I am comparing prices and it seems like it just way too much. $1000 one way to Japan.  Mainly Flight costs are just too much. Is $2000 round trip a good price, or is there a better way to travel? Anyone elsee got experience in this?

Walk! You'll get there eventually!

I will be dead by the time I get to Japan :P.

Anyways already wasted all my money on an awesome trip. Flights are pretty seasonal, as are hotels. Exchange rates help.

I should have waited a year to plan a cheaper trip. But impulse too fun.

Well ticket prices should be a bit cheaper now since oil went down a lot.

Where did you go? And why do you wanna visit Japan and not Taiwan etc?

Most Asian countries are highly recommendable but Japan is indeed something special imo.

Where do you live?

I always use momondo.com to find the cheapest flights. You can find flights from New York to Tokyo for under $490 (and less if you spend a bit of time).

Use skiplagged.com
It's a really good flight finder.
I booked a flight roundtrip to LA from Boston just a few days ago for 240$
Im leaving march 15th.

Skiplagged currently has flights for bos to tokyo for 1300 roundtrip.

Biggest tip, leave on Tuesdays. Tuesdays are the cheapest day to fly.
Also, fly in September. Just found a roundtrip from BOS to TYO for 926$
tuesday September 13th to Tuesday September 27th

Source: Ive been to Japan three times.

Book on a Tuesday, fly on Tuesday. For some reason Tuesdays are always the cheapest option.

I went to japan for 18 days. Whole thing cost me about $4000 and flight alone was $2238. The reasoning for Japan was I went with a friend who is a japanese major. But it is in my top 3 to visit anyways.

I went to Minneapolis airport for my flight, and honestly since it wasn't direct it was subpar. I could have swiped a deal for $1500 but it soldout quickly and went up to $2238. This was during peak tourist time (for Japanese people and foreigners) in late July.

So I learned to not travel at that time.

Go somewhere cheaper first. Then fly from that place to Japan.
