Demand. Mad Max is a phenomenal, fun movie, but the market has so many action/superhero movies. There haven't been many teen comedies, let alone a sequel to an unexpected hit.

Fury Road is a rated R movie, and Pitch Perfect 2 is not a rated R movie. Typically, PG-13 movies on average make almost double on their opening week and total gross compared R rated movies.

Also, Fury Road is consider an almost new franchise for anyone less than age 25. It is doubtful that majority of the young male opening week audience have seen a Mad Max movie. Pitch Perfect is a sequel to a recent box office hit.
