Forums - Gaming Discussion - Playtonic (Former Rare Developers) Unveils Their Dynamic Duo: Yooka-Laylee

Banjo-Kazooie, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter...

Now meet Yooka (the Chameleon) and Laylee (the Bat)!

The platforms are now officially annouced to be coming to PC, PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One. However, the timings of these releases is contigent on how well the funding goes.

"Yooka is the chameleon and Laylee, the bat, and if the dynamic and style seems familiar it’s because they were created by Steve Mayles, the same character artist who designed platforming icons Banjo and Kazooie and the modern Kong family during his time at Rare.

Using their unique abilities, the two characters work together to fight enemies and traverse the world around them. Yooka, being a lizard, uses his tongue like a grappling hook, while Laylee can pick up his partner and fly for a short period of time or unleash a sonar blast. The duo have a variety of moves to draw upon. You can see the characters in action in the news video up above."

Well I guess I'm the only one that cares. Oh well.

Love that Yooka's doing the classic Sonic pose though.

I'm sure this will be something to behold.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Underwhelming. I didn't have high hopes for this, but still...

We all wanted those tight yellow shorts, but fate is a cruel mistress.

Interesting design. Never was much a fan of old Rare's character designs, it's alright.

I'm glad that this is also being released on the Wii U... though I'm not sure if I'm interested in this game yet

I hope they have a good reason for a chameleon+bat combo. It just seems so random and their names as well as their design isn't exactly inspiring.

Oh god, it just hit me. There's a chameleon because this is going to be a stealth game. I am out.

Forced stealth segments? Definitely an 8th gen game then.

But yeah, I'm curious to see how they work together. In the video we can see Laylee using Yooka as a rolling ball. And obviously Yooka's tongue will be important, as well as Laylee's limited flight.

Glad it's hitting all major consoles though.

But a bear + bird (both named after musical instruments) was a reasonable combo?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Hat In Time still looks better than this, but 2 exploration platformer games >>>>> 0.

Will be pledging at whatever the soundtrack tier is.

I think it's great that things like Unity and Kickstarter can allow team sizes to go back to what they were in the 90s, and thus produce quality games in the more niche genres.

Graphically it isn't even close and this game is still a way's off.

Yooka-Laylee looks much better.
