3DS at 83% market share.

There's no competition in the handheld space at all...... Sony aren't even trying, western publishers don't care about handheld games anymore.

Meanwhile Nintendo and Microsoft are both trying to push their home consoles hard and supporting them but sony will/has reached 50% marketshare so it's kind of a bigger accomplishment.

Android and Iphone want a word ;)

Indeed, it is coming! And it's going to be quite a historic event.

VGChartz will have to celebrate in some fashion. :P

Not to be rude, but keep in mind that Nintendo has had no competition in that regard. Even though the PS Vita is there, its botched launch, along with numerous other issues, gave Nintendo the Handheld market prematurely.

it's probably coming, but let's not celebrate prematurely

I remember when the Wii was creeping closer and closer to 50% and there were threads for every .1% it gained, but guess what, it never made it to 50% market share!

Isn't 50% marketshare something more usual than people think? The NES sold more than 60 million units compared to the 18-19 million units the Sega M.System and the Atari 7200 combined, the PS1 sold 100 millions compared to the +30 millions of N64 and +9 millions of Sega Saturn, the PS2 sold more than the GC,XBox, Dreamcast and GameBoy Advanced COMBINED, and in every handheld gen Nintendo had almost a solid control of the market. Gens like the 4th and the 7th are the exception, not the norm.

We've really only gone one generation without a clear and concise ruler. At the same time, it's been 9 years since 6th generation started on its way out, so it's still been a while.

While Android and iOS have become very big in this regard, the market has shown serious signs of slowdown.

If Nintendo and Sony ( I hope) release new handhelds with a heavy marketing push, release a platter of 1st and 2nd Party games along side it, they would be able to keep the handheld market afloat.

Slowdown or not ios / android have the biggest pie in the gaming on the go. They even managed to pull nintendo where everyone failed. Plus next Nintendo handheld will probablt be the last as Sony wont release another handheld system.

I think Nintendo will go on longer than that in the handheld market. No matter how much money flows in through mobile gaming, a lot of company's struggle to stay alive on that platform.
