Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anyone think the Dreamcast is over-rated now?

Nah, it's the only console from its time period that I keep plugged in and use from time to time! It's still under rated... On the other hand people talk about the N64 as if it was the best thing ever, even back then its library did not hold a candle to the PCXs or even to the Saturn, especially in Japan (Sorry, but Panzer Dragoon Saga is this good, and the schumps... hmm unbeatable!).

Games on theN64 are way too blurry and most of them have a frame rate so low it's near impossible to play them, beyond Mario 54 and the Zelda games there is no interets in exploring this system's library, on the other hand the PSX, Saturn and Dreamcast (DC is more in the PS2 gen I think?) anyway, PSX and Saturn have a good number of games that are pure gameplay bliss, their controllers are awesome.

I definitely understand this feeling, but you can't really argue with the strong lineup of exclusive games that were put out in that short of time. at the time, all of the dreamcast games were pretty much exclusive, unique, and some of them were amazingly good.

I felt this disappointment when I played jet grind radio for the first time. the graphics and the music are amazing, the gameplay is good, but not nearly as tight as I expected from all the praise it got... I wanted to like it so bad, it had so much personality and style... hopefully I will grow to like it but IDK

Did it ? I always thought it was not as good. Sure, GTA 3/etc./etc. were super impressive and novative, and I believe it was not achievable on the DC, but PS2 games had mostly blurry, greyed, and repetitive texture associated with an extrem aliasing. And I believe it's fact, as the DC had 8 MB for the graphic card, with texture compression and modern effects, while the PS2 had 4 MB, no compression, and plain textures with outdated limitations in term of size and color.

They were at very least in the same range, like comparing the X1 and PS4.  The jump from PS1/Saturn/N64 to DC was astounding that anyone could see.  The differences between the 6th generation systems was rarely such that any had that same gap and wow factor.

It's not overrated nor underrated. It was only a console that only has few good games on it's shelf.

I loved my Dreamcast but I agree with you, it is a bit overrated nowadays.

Shame on you people, trash talking Dreamcast after it kicked so much ass...

I hate you all.

I said this a while ago:

We are nostalgic for the DC because it got canned. But was it the "best console ever", as some have said? No!

Yes, it had great games like Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Shenmue, 2K Sports games exclusive, Jet Set Radio, etc. We're fond of those games and they are the shining examples of the DCs library. But we never stop and remember: that's all it had. DC was on the market for what, 2 years? When thought about rationally, does its library really compare to Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, GTA, MGS, SoTC, Dragon Quest, God of War, Jak and Daxter, DMC, Okami (I could go on forever) etc. for the PS2? What about Halo, Blinx, Jade Empire, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Forza, Morrowind, KOTOR, etc for the Xbox? And that's just games from the same generation as DC.

As I said when I first made this comment: let's keep our fond memories of the DC as just that. Fond memories. Because when you're objective about the console, it's not even in the top 5 of best consoles ever.

Haven't played it in years, so I couldn't tell you. I do have fond memories of it though.

Overrated? Not at all. The Dreamcast was an amazing console that was ahead of its time. Had it gotten support from EA, I think video game history may have turned out much different.

My thoughts on this will never change as long as 'dreamcast' is my Xbox Live gamertag. ;)

Playing jet set radio future at the moment and I can echo those sentiments. Controls just dont feel right and it makes the gameplay a bit weird/frustrating at times.

As for the dreamcast, it barely existed here in australia as far as I noticed. SEGA put out an incredibly strong third party showing on all three of the other 6th gen consoles though.
