Very unlikely 59 38.56%

It's impossible, it will never happen 21 13.73%

Total:153

I was on facebook earlier, and I saw someone talking about how Nintendo is going to be "developing" smartphone games now and how that is the first step for them to go and make a smartphone of their own.  I personally wont say it's impossible to happen, but I find it unlikely, especially in his estimated timeframe (which is 5 years).  Since I'm no expert in this, I would like to see what most of you guys think of this.  Do you guys think that there's a good chance that Nintendo will attempt to make their own smartphone?

The probably will eventually, but I don't really think that they would any time soon..

Need to clarify this for you but Nintendo will not be developing smartphone games.  The deal is that they lend their IP to DeNA who will then develop smartphone games based on those IP.  Nintendo themselves are not making smartphone games now.

I actually know that.  That's why I put developing in quoatation marks.

Highly doubt it but if they do, it better come with a controller and tits! Heck, they can leave the controller out if they have some tits

This isn't true either.

Nintendo will co-develop the games. And DeNA is basically like a 2nd party for Nintendo now, they own 10% of DeNA.

This is not just a run of the mill licensing deal. This is closer to a full blown merger.

I thought that I read that Nintendo will mostly leave the developing up to DeNA, and Nintendo will manage it.  Then again, I didn't read the entire story.  Mostly summaries.

You are correct. Pretty much just as you said.

It's a clenched partnership at this point. Not a merger like the other said as that would make it a single entity. It's still a partnership, this happens in business.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

My point is why would they make their own smartphone if they aren't even making their own games for it?

Bit of trivia that will lend you credence...did you know Nintendo developed an OS in 2007 that was also worked on by Google and has many similarities to the Android OS (which launched in 2008)?  ES Operating System.

The person I'm referring to would not in the least be swayed by that kind of argument.  Not much would persuade him to think otherwise.

I think the 3DS follow-up handheld console could possibly have phone and e-reader functions built-in (maybe also some smartphone functions), and thus become a more all-inclusive handheld device instead of "just" a handheld console. Would also marry well with the new concept announcement of the mysterious NX.

A separate Smartphone line on the other hand seems extremy unlikely to me though, as that one would undermine the sales of their handheld console

Sony owns 13% of DeNA.
