Hockey is pretty popular in the US, or at least it is in Texas of all places.

Ok, but hockey is not in your blood or in your culture like it is for Canadians. From what I hear, attendance in the Southern states is no where near as loyal when the team is loosing. Of course when you have teams in the playoffs it gets popular, but regular season, I'm pretty sure you can get tickets. On topic: Football (soccer) is not in North America's blood and culture.

 In Texas at least it has always been pretty popular, even when the Stars are losing.  You can pretty much always get tickets but that's true for most sports save for the big games.

Hmm other theorie;..maybe because the USA is not so good in it?

In european countries you see that a lot.

If a national team plays good how more fans it will have and how more popular it is;

Who knows if USA gets to the final of a World Cup tournament it will maybe get very popular too..

=/;

Basketball and football are by far the most popular sports in America. Lots of young people like to play soccer but it is not a popular spectator sport (not even in the top 7). It may because you need to be in decent shape to play the game. Maybe because the game is somewhat new to America. Either way, who cares, it's only soccer :)

Actually, completely random fact but my uncle Tatu use to play for the Dallas Sidekicks. Indoor soccer was awesome because it was like hockey without the ice and Tatu was something like a legend for indoor soccer.

A lot of people play soccer at my school, mostly because I live in the west and theres a lot of hispanics here.

I think its because soccer is a sport thats hard to get good at and it takes a lot of footwork. basketball and football are easy to play because catching, and throwing is a lot more natural.

and some americans see soccer as a girl sport +_+

others think it requires too much running.

 what? a girl sport? omg. just like saying soccer has no contact.

yes it requires a lot of running, which would explain why lots of black people pplay it. aha jks im black, just a joke. but

 i think one main reason is because soccer can be played anywhere. if your some poor kid in brazil, all you need is a ball made out of rubberbands, and two cones for a net. similar to my school (we use a crusty ball and jackets for goal posts cuz my school is so damn poor).

 also because soccer wasnt made in north america, americans dont bother with it. just like europeans hate american football.

one crazy reason is, the british controlled a big chunk of the world and the "created and developed soccer" so they passed it on to their colonies and it soon spread, just like they did with cricket. yes its a crazy reason.

market saturation

@Twestern Alright. Texas might be the exeption to the rule. Perhaps it is even the exeption that prompted the NHL to try a southern expansion project. Last I heard Phoenix was a pretty tough sell. A desert should not have a team. @Cheetos: I agree about the national team. If they had a shot at the World cup, then the sport would take off. To get that shot, the team would have to be massively funded and supported. I don't know who would make that investment, it wouldn't be the government that's for sure.

Because just like golf it's extremely boring to watch. Americans like watching games with fast paced action like football and basketball.

You do realize that ratings for major tournaments in golf are huge, right?
