Forums - Sony Discussion - Thinking about getting The Order 1886

My suggestion is not to buy it. If you really want it, wait for a hefty discount on PSN, or buy it used for $20.
Other than for the graphics, it is a forgettable game, and a one that can easily be missed completely. Alternative: save the money and watch the playthrough on YouTube.
If you need a new game to spend money and time on, I recommend Dying Light.

It's the best western game i've played since the release of TLOU. Even after plattinuming it I've already finished it 2 more times. Both "watching" and "playing" sections are a complete joy to experience. I felt look doing another playthrough but am waiting to see if there's any word on a photo mode update and i'll do it then.

I feel like the reviews in this thread far exceed anyone of the other ones I've read in terms of quality.
From what I gather, the story is decent but not great for what the game set out to be.
The main draw does look like the characters and the beauty of the game.
I'm hoping that RAD release a multiplayer because that would improve the game's replayability immensely.

As someone who bought the game digitally for $60 and is now stuck with it forever, I cannot stress enough how mediocre/bad this game is. I honestly wouldn't even rent it if I could do it over again. I beat the game on normal in just under 6 hours. I would pick up a decent multiplat you've been thinking about playing instead.

I'm liking it so far. I have just finished the airship mission been playing it for 3 or 4 hours now (on hard), maybe a bit longer. I've died a few times partly from being stupid, well mostly from being stupid actually. There's nothing I think is bad about the game per se, but there are some odd gameplay design choices which I think could have been done better.

One pet peeve of mine is invisible walls, but this is not unique to The Order so I can't single this game out for having them. But really levels should be able to be designed without having small wooden trolleys be the thing that blocks your path and stops you going towards what is inevitably a dead end anyway.

I'm not a TPS aficionado so I can't really say how the Order is in the TPS department. But I'm OK with the gunfights as they have been. Some of the fights have been perhaps a bit too much like whackamole with the enemy AI being a bit on the dull side, but again I don't think it's been all that much different to other TPS games I've played.

The game isn't exciting enough and the story not engaging enough to make me stay up well past when I should be in bed. But it's pretty good. Some parts of the script are not so great, but again over all the script is pretty good.

In terms of review scores I normally score games lower than critics who seem to like a game as much as I do. Si The Order is heading towards a 7/10 from me. But I think most critics who have about the same opinion of the game would probably be giving it a 7.5 or 8/10. Basically it's a good game but aside from the visuals it doesn't do anything to a great, let alone excellent level. The visuals are great, but even with that there seem to have been some compromises made to achieve the sort of visual performance they have, two notable compromises are, no water splash or ripples when walking through puddles, and no reflections of people in mirrors or glass. When this was first mentioned in a review I thought that perhaps there was a narrative reason why members of the Orde might not reflect. But I got to one place where there were civilian bystanders and their reflections (and Sir Galahad's) did not show. So it's kind of funny that in the pursuit of realism, they have had to do some things that are noticeably unreal.

Seems like this is the "review" thread, so I'll post my thoughts here.

The Order 1886 is a facinating game, in that it may not age well in the long run (any game relying on impressing with graphics look silly eventually), but will be a killer app for the PS4 once it is marked down to Greatest Hits price. It's 50% third person shooter, 5% murder stealth & traversal, 45% interactive drama. The TPS gameplay is competent and made interesting with some sweet guns; yet I often found myself wanting a quick 180 turn ability, a dedicated melee button (rather than a contextual button prompt), and a better camera solution for when your back is against the wall (at which point your big dumb head takes up over half the screen).

The interactive drama aspect is as good as that seen in Beyond Two Souls, but without the illusion of choice that title presents. What many have labeled QTEs are actually just contextual button prompts for the defacto "interact" button, Triangle. The "boss QTEs" are fun, to the point I wasn't even mad that the final encounter was one. Due to the nature of 1886, I was often taken by surprise when other QTEs would pop up, failing them because I thought it was still cutscene or reacting with a normal gameplay button rather than the arbitrary Circle it wants.

The stealth and traversal (apparently the Order all studied with Sir Francis Drake) are all workmanlike. And that's the crux of 1886's failings - unremarkable gameplay propped up with many cool ideas, mostly the setting and the seamlessly cinematic flow of the game. The game isn't bad at all, but you will find yourself wanting. Perhaps RAD will satisfy with the implied (and, lets face it, inevitable) sequel.

Verdict - Good (3/5), worth buying at $40 ($60 if you're impatient). The soundtrack fits the game well but is probably only worth buying separate if you collect movie soundtracks, with only the title theme really stuck out as being remotely memorable.

The game is much better than critics and haters make it out to be. The game is not for everyone but for those who do like games like Uncharted or Gears, you will like The Order. The length of the game is fine, no shorter than a God of War game, don't be fooled by people who have not even played the game and rely on vids of speed runs and such. Took me 8-10 hours playing normally without rushing or screwing off.

Also the gameplay, while it adds nothing new, is rock solid. It is excellent for what it is. The game is by no means perfect, but worth the money if it is your kind of game.

Overall a 7.8/10 sounds fair to me.

It is a great game which amazing shooting. Just don't expect alot of replay value

Speaking of story, it's even worse than its gameplay. First 11 chapters are ok like most games out there but nothing mind blowing. After what happened in chapter 11, ppl would expect it'll take around the same time as before ch11 to finish the story. But it just ended in an hour without even mentioning anything about other important characters. It's like the writer in a rush to end the story for the sake of end the story. 4/10 for story IMO.

Keep thinking about it, when teh price drops to $30, then stop thinking and buy it.
