Dat install base keeps on growing! So sweet!

The downplaying in this thread is pretty funny though

I do not own a gaming PC, but I have gotten the idea that Steam is mostly about these evergreens:

  • Dota 2
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Football Manager
  • Garry's Mod
  • Civ

Why can these games not be on consoles too?

That's not my impression at all. Sure, those are some of the most played games on Steam, but for a lot of people Steam is mainly just a hub to play a lot of different PC games cheap. And, well.. Team Fortress 2 is technically on Xbox 360, but it kinda sucks. :P

I wonder how many actual users that figure translates into, but it's really awesome anyway, as it's just a fraction, although big, of total dedicated and hardcore PC gamers, which on their turn are about one third of total PC gamers (including the most casual and the least active ones)

Steam logs the user in by default. How many users actually go in a disable the auto-login? No idea. But I can see that there's only 6M users currently online.

Most 7th and 8th generation consoles also log the user in by default when you turn on the device. How many active users are on PSN, XBL or Nintendo Network each month?

How many concurrent users are the record on PSN, XBL or Nintendo network.

And Steam ain't preinstalled on each PC sold. You have to install it and open an account... so there are no "accidental" steam users who are counted.

Nopes, PSN does not log you on by default. And people do a lot more on their PC than use Steam. You could be browsing VGC but Steam counts it as you being on Steam. On the consoles, if it's on and you're logged in, you're most likely be using the network or gaming.

You can create a Steam account and never use - you'll count as an active user since it's in the tray.

All my playstation and xbox devices try to log in automatically when they are switched on and find an internet connection... syncing trophies, checking messages and friend requests, looking for updates, downloading advertisements which are shown on the homescreen of some devices...

I'm sure they count me as an active user for that, too.

I blame Civ 5 (over 500 hours played).  I bet I'd have over 1000 hours on Civ3 but I only have 99 hours right now considering I had a non steam version of Civ3 for a long time.

Steam does have some incredibly addictive games!

Have you played much Beyond Earth?

Nope, I haven't bought that one yet.  I was going to wait for a sale perhaps at the end of this year.  I heard it was alright but nothing too spectacular so I was going to wait for price drop.  I've just played Civ 3, 4, and 5.

Try tell that to my PS4 since it logs me in by itself the minute i turn it on O_o

That's because you've set it to do that.
