Forums - Politics Discussion - Freedom of speech is under attack and it could get worse

There is nothing in this world that is perfect. If you think perfect freedom of speech exists then you are wrong. After Paris attack I saw someone using their "freedom of speech" to take a dig using nazis against Jews. TBH everyone thinks their opinion is perfect and justifies it with "freedom of speech". Todays history is twisted by past victors. No hate to me guys. Because this is how human race has been acting after its creation and so called modern era is no different.

There is no country where speech is absolutely free from constraints. It's just a matter of where you draw the line. In parts of Europe it's illegal to deny the holocaust, and some countries will not allow foreign holocaust deniers to enter the country.

It's the laughable thing about so many people who yell and scream about freedom. They fail to understand that freedom is legitimately constrained in all sorts of ways, and indeed they normally agree with at least some of these constraints, though perhaps don't actually realise they are constraints on freedom.

Interesting video. Awfully vague on proposing a solution though.

For those interested, here's the video OP's video references:

Not removed from YT, just restricted due to, I assume, the depiction of someone's death. Not a very graphic video but still depicts a murder.

Political correctness is what is eating the west up.

Racism is what is killed the east.

Since the sound on my laptop hasn't been working of late, I looked up france's censorship. You know something is off when you get fined for critizing politicians. Also, they censor just about anything that someone might find offensive or that they really disagree with. They have tried to sue yahoo, twitter and wikipedia to take down/censor certain info. France doesn't really believe in true freedom of speech. It's more like "Freedom of Some Speech". They will outright censor information.

America has it's on problems with freedom of speech or the media and people going way too far with anti-discrimination laws and sentiment. Blacks in general are allowed to be openly racist and it's the cool thing to do. The media is heavily politicized and loves sensationalism.  Cops can't arrest illegals or ask for proof of citizenship because they're hispanic and you would be discriminating against them if you did.

Why laugh at people or their ideas though? It's part of the problem. Understanding or trying to understand others is a much better solution than laughing at others. It leads to harmony.

It is obvious that freedom of speech can be abused of. However many people today are resorting to censorship to deal with that abuse, in essence throwing the baby with the bath water.

The problem with abuse of freedom of speech is not freedom of speech. The problem is abuse.

So, the question is, how do you deal with abuse of freedom of speech? You identify the source. Abuse of freedom of speech most likely originates in hate: e.g. using words to harm others.

Fix the problem instead of throwing the baby with the bath water is what I propose.

How do you deal with hate? Well, hate leaves traces. Violence, harassment, lack of respect, intolerance. Love doesn't do those things. Love is the opposite of hate. Identify hate and you are a step closer to the solution.

Irony is that laughing at ideas is freedom of speech. Your are free to view an idea someone has voiced with ridicule if you believe it to be ridiculous.

In answer to your other questions, Education. It's all about education. I know when to shut up, when to speak up and I know what is and isn't offensive, is and isn't right based on my upbringing and education.

Hmm, pie.

Yep. It is ridiculous to hunt others freedom of speech to protect yours. Seems like people don't see they are acting like dictators.

Someone is spreading hate speech? Do litigation but don't propose to limit the free speech because a biggot will use it.

And as far as I know in Brazil the only limitation to freedom of speech is the "politically right watch" and some hatefull speech against minorities.

I think that the idea that what offends people can be understood by any one person is incorrect as it varies from one person to another. I think that the best answer to what offends people is "everything" as their is almost always someone who is offended by something.

If the muslims who came out for censoring speech that offends their sensibilities were asked "should religious speech be banned if it offends other people?" they would immediately show their hypocrisy and say that restricts their own freedoms.
