Forums - Gaming Discussion - Core Nintendo fans are to blame for the Wii U situation

Hardcore Nintendo fan here; 14/19 of my boxed Wii U games are third party, and I have Splatoon, a new IP, preordered.

Obviously this won't apply to everybody. The sales and comments from Youtube, and forums like this very one don't lie.

So, this doesn't apply to you

Nope. That is not how it works. Companies create products and market them to a certain segment. Nintendo manages to capture that segment because they are satisfying that segments needs. 3rd parties can't do it, its their own fault. Its not Nintendo's fault and it certainly isnt the segments fault for existing.
You cant blame a market for existing, for not having the same needs as the broader segment that the PS4 captures. To achieve sucess, you dont need to sell alot, you need to sell the right product to the right people. That is the nature of Marketing. The sugestion of otherwise is just corporate propaganda to hide their incompetence.

Perhaps what you meant is that you want Nintendo to target a broader audience, though they did that with the Wii and it wasnt that popular. I tink this is more of a case of you beeing in a different segment and wishing Nintendo would target you. Its fair, but it certainly isnt the fault of those that like and buy their classic franchises.

But isn't there a good deal of hype for Splatoon here and on other forums? It's the #3 most wanted Wii U game in the latest VGChartz poll.

Amazing how the whole OP is wrong.

Nintendo fans buy good games. They definetely want many third party games but those companies keep giving nintendo consumers the middle finger.

i agree especially with that last paragraph, if nintendo made more new stuff (Splatoon is new i know, but i want MORE new stuff) then maybe they would end up making something new that i like.

for example i really like the fact that Sony isnt scared of making new IPs, and they are not scared of said new IPs failing and dying (PS all stars, Lair, Heavenly Sword etc), but for every one or twice failed game they hit the jackpot with great games, just look at last gen almost every big Sony game was a new IP: (Uncharted, Demons Souls, Little Big Planet, TLOU, Infamous, Motorstorm, Puppeter, Resistance etc).

now the fact that they get a lot of new IPs doesnt mean that im gonna like every single new game they make, i for example am not interested in Motorstorm, Resistence and Little Big Planet and those were some of the Big new games on last gen, but thankfully they kept making new games and i found my favorite PS3 game in one of those new IPs of las gen, Demons Souls.

so yeah i hope Splatoon is only the beggining of a new stream of NEW Nintendo games.

You said it greatly, I agree.

I find it to be pretty cool that both new & old PS fans get to experience new games for the first time, at the same time. Meaning, PS4 is my first PS but when I play Bloodborne for the first time, returning fans will be getting a new IP as well. I won't be 'late' to anything.

Nintendo made the Wii U unnapealing to the mainstream, so they get bad sales, so they don't get 3rd parties (not taking into account the weak hardware). The fans have nothing to do with it.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Nintendo just needs to balance things. One game per popular franchise is what I'd ask for, maybe 3 Mario Jum p n Runs (1 2D, 1 3D, 1 experimental).
Aside from that, create new and interesting IPs!

Now, another big issue with Nintendo that I've noticed by buying a PS is the lack of new IP's. Sure, they have a decent amount of new eShop IP's but they will go unnoticed on store shelves and will never be seen by the average non-Wii U gamer. They need new IP's that will get public attention. So, why doesn't Nintendo make too many new IP's? The core Nintendo fans won't let them. Every year fans ask them about the next Mario, or Zelda, or Metroid and so on. Retro for example, should be making a new IP but you know as well as I do that if Metroid isn't shown, fans will be disappointed. Fans don't want a new IP, they'd rather take a new entry in a comfortable series. This is fine but is hurting Nintendo's chances in bringing in new fans.

You emphasize new IPs but the biggest sellers on any platform tend to be older IPs. It would seem to me fans preferring older, established IPs over newer ones isn't unique to Nintendo fans.

Or perhaps they are much riskier than older IPs? Making 'too many new IPs' means you risk losing a lot of money on titles that don't catch on.

Do third party games not sell well? Well Bayo 2 is at nearly 600K (with digital sales probably a bit above), Hyrule Warriors is one of the best selling Warriors games of all time, Rayman Legends sold around the same as the other 2 consoles (less than Bayo 2 I might add) on Wii U.

Or are we talking about COD or other 3rd party games that were half assed and known not to have DLC, parts of the game included on other versions, or special editions. No, those don't sell well on the Wii U.

As for new Nintendo IPs we have Wonderful 101, Xenoblade (I know X is the second one, but come on it's still pretty fresh due to most of us not seeing XC until 2011/2012), and Splatoon. Not to mention Project Guard and Project Giant Robo.

A few of your points seem to be a bit off.

Takes a long hard look at all my friends that are hardcore Nintendo fans,

Looks at their Gamecube, N64, Wii & Wii-U game collection............

See's 90% Of their collection being Nintendo 1st party games.

Agrees with post 100%.
