Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rumor: Microsoft working on VR headset, to be released in 2015

Microsoft is working on its own a virtual reality headset, according to sources who spoke with TechRadar. The headset is being developed for the Xbox One and there are already dev kits in the hands of developers.

The development of the VR headset is being handled by Microsoft's hardware team, who also develops their Surface tablet.

Microsoft is planning to unveil the VR headset at E3 2015 in June and the device is expected to be released in 2015, according to another report on Digitimes.

Awesome of true. I'm just waiting for SOMEBODY to do it. Anybody! With Microsoft, maybe there will be some cool Kinect integration.

Am I the only person that's annoyed that you need to buy a 300+ dollar VR headset for every system? Would have been nice if we JUST had the Rift and it worked on all devices.

Interesting but will be hard really hard for it to succeed.

Will be a tough sale after the way they lied to consumers and ditched the kinect, hard to trust a company on a add on after they did that. Then its got about half the power of the PS4, vr will need plenty power to make it look decent. X1 vr will be at a major disadvantage.

from what i saw kinect has some serious lag issues, if it really does then it would be useless for VR.

i think MS will jump on the VR bandwagen, but i dont think they will have the time to release it in 2015.

I'm pretty sure this was said a while back:

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/xbox-boss-confirms-microsoft-is-working-on-virtual-reality/0131845

Here's the full article's writeup:

"Phil Spencer has said that the virtual reality revolution may indeed finally be upon us.

Furthermore, speaking to Forbes the Xbox boss confirmed that Microsoft has been toying with the tech for some time, although any official announcement sounds way off.

“Virtual reality is a really interesting area, especially for games, and while it seems like it's been ‘just over the horizon’ for the last 20 years or so, I think we could finally start seeing it prove out soon for both gamers and developers,” he said.

“Our Microsoft research team has been playing with virtual reality for quite a while, and while we don't have anything to officially announce, it's clearly an area people are excited about.

“The potential is definitely there.”

The article is dated 1st May 2014.

And this is the biggest reason why I don't see VR taking off right now. People just aren't going to dole out that much money.

Again, why didnt MS just buy Oculus?? Would have saved them a lot of time and they would be on par with Sony. Not only that but they could sell to XBO and PC owners.

I highly, highly, highly doubt that MS is able to put out a VR headset with any kind of worthwile software support in 2015, I doubt anyone can.

Nah.  I got a Kinect. It works pretty great for Xbox One.  I am a bit of an Xbox fan so I may be blinded, though.  My friend at work unhooked his and traded his Kinect games....

Anyway, would be cool to look down and actually see my hand or something.  I wouldn't even need a game!
