Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sharp to provide Nintendo with free-form display (Rumour) [Guys Who Made the 3D Screen for 3DS] Next HH Earliest Holiday 2017?

Am I the only one that thinks the 3DS will be around past 2018? If the N3DS is succesful and keeps sales going in the west, maybe the 3DS can keep working until NIntendo gets the Fusion (or the HDS, but with the existence of the N3DS, I'm starting to doubt it) working.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I understand the usage of shaped displays in cars or the like, but for gaming? What's wrong with normal rectangular screens?

Nothing, but after reading what theproof00 wrote, those displays could be used to create handhelds with smaller bezels, thus leading to smaller plastic cases and smaller handheld consoles.

Basically this could allow for handhelds to keep their big screens while being smaller enough to fit our pockets... again.

In that case, that would be nice of course.

Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/

experiments are just that, experiments so whatever Nintendo is playing with now will not necessarily be what comes out. they are probably testing how far they can take shapes while playing games

Does tis if true prove that the next HH wont come intill 2017? Would make sense with N3DS launching next year for the west.

I said before i could see

3DS: Early 2011 - Holiday 2017 (6 years : 10 months)
WiiU Holiday 2012- Holiday 2018 (6 years)

Six years for the Wii-U may be one too many. I'm not sure there would much point unless sales drastically improve. Can you imagine what they'd be like in year 5, let alone six? It will be ridiculous.

I think 5 years is max.

Sankei Biz: Sharp to provide Nintendo with free-form display (Rumour)

According to Sankei Biz, Sharp (already providing Nintendo with the 3D screen of the 3DS) will provide Nintendo with a free-form display for their next handheld (they mention the 3DS or a successor) or maybe their QoL device. It's all a rumour, but quite credible if Sankei Biz is to be believed.

From the looks of it, mass production for that type of screen (not made just for Nintendo, it's one of Sharp's own projects) was supposed to start in 2017, but Sharp managed to speed things up and production will actually start in 2016. Apparently, Nintendo are experimenting with some sort of donut-shapred display.

If that free-form display is for the next handheld, I doubt we're going to see it before late 2016/early 2017 at the earliest. Same for QoL. What's more, costs for such screen will probably be quite high, and we know Nintendo like their components cheap in order to maximise profits on hardware sales... So who knows what it's all about for now.

Prototype for Free Form

They wouldn't begin production in 2016 only to wait an entire year or more until the holidays of 2017 in order to launch, that wouldn't make any sense.

If Nintendo has already been experimenting and prototyping the technology, and Sharp pushed the mass production into 2016, then it is likely it will launch in Japan in 2016, and Europe in the beginning quarter of 2017.  Although this looks more like Nintendo is making a spedometer for a car, not a handheld system.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Just a thought. Normally on an handled you have the screen (in center) and buttons on sides, with this tecnology they could create a screen that covers all the obtainable surface, on top, on bottom and even around buttons. They could even make rounded screens to change symbols on buttons, depending on the context.

I've made a quick mokup, just for fun. That's what I think they could do.

Happy to see someone that uses his brain, that is exactly what comes to mind reading this info!

Even more, since it's a foldable/bendable (& I know a thing or 2 about bending...) that could lead to that kind of thing, no saying it will but it might:
