Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS4 VS. Wii *First Year Results*

ICStats said:
How long will PS4 be able to track with the Wii? Wii had 3 to 4 amazing years. It's hard to imagine in it's 4th December, Wii sold 7.4Mil, about as much as Wii U has sold in 2 years.

From November 25th 2006 - January 3rd 2009 (2 years), Wii sold
43,595,128 units. Now, what exactly would keep PS4 from obtaining the same result?

Right now PS4 cost $150 more, than what Wii did, and it is still pulling Wii numbers. PS4 clearly has the better 3rd party support between the two, and PS4 has a lot more interesting projects coming up;
Playstation Vue, Playstation Now, and Morpheus.

Also, there will be tons of games next year.

Q1 2015

Jan 20-----Saints Row IV: Re-Elected
Jan 27-----Dying Light
Feb 10----Evolve
Feb 17----Resident Evil: Revelations 2
Feb 17----Dragon Ball Xenoverse
Feb 20----The Order: 1886
Feb 24----The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Mar 17----Project Cars
Mar 17----Battlefield: Hardline
Mar 17----Final Fantasy Type-O HD (includes Final Fantasy XV demo)
Mar 24----Bloodborne

Well, it has the potential I think, but it will have to grow 50% year-over-year to hit that target.

The fact that the Wii didn't seem to get a black friday boost in 2007 seems off to me...

Supply?

PS4 sales are from gamers who want to play games but Wii sales are from casuals who wanted to try motion control gimmick. So, PS4 sales are all time great for any gaming machine considering its 150$ more than Wii and it has competition in their segments from XB1 and Wii U unlike Wii was different from PS3 and XB360.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

Wii: November 25th 2006 - January 5th 2008 = 19,894,369

PS4: November 16th 2013 - January 3rd 2015 = 15,087,310 (as of November 22nd)

With 6 weeks left, the PS4 has to sell an average of 802.000 units per week, for it to best Wii's first year results, and with Black Friday and Christmas coming up, I say it is bound to happen.

PS4 is currently tracking higher, than what Wii did Holiday 2007, here is a comparison.

-----Wii 2007--------------------PS4 2014--------------------------------

Nov 03: 296,372-----------Nov 01: 314,356 = 06.07 % (17,984)
Nov 10: 282,996-----------Nov 08: 553,533 = 95.60 % (270,537)
Nov 17: 469,651-----------Nov 15: 481,003 = 02.42 % (11,352)
Nov 24: 673,069-----------Nov 22: 734,388 = 09.11 % (61,319)
Dec 01: 699,757-----------Nov 29:
Dec 08: 728,498-----------Dec 06:
Dec 15: 686,612-----------Dec 13:
Dec 22: 1,462,609-------- Dec 20:
Dec 29: 737, 820-----------Dec 27:
Jan 05: 386,299------------ Jan 03:

Not to piss in your poredge, but your logic is a bit flawed considering this:

Wii:

  • JP December 2, 2006
  • NA November 19, 2006
  • EU December 8, 2006
  • AUS December 7, 2006
PS4:
 15 november 2013
 29 november 2013
 22 februari 2014
Straight from Ninty:
LTD 31st of Dec 2007: 20,130,000 WW
So you take the sales form release NA for PS4, but skip a week for Wii? Only NA got the Wii in November, ROTW had to wait till december. Now PS4 also has a disadvantage by starting late in Japan. Also how do you measure first year? Isn't it usually either November-November or Jan-Jan? Or at least an equal timespan? Considering these things sold/sell loads a week it can be quite the difference.
On a side note. Wii sales rate increased during second AND 3rd year from allready steap sales. So yeah the PS4 is doing really well, and I'm curious to see where it will be heading.

Thanks, I didn't know.

How would you suggest I made the comparison - using VGC numbers?

I'm really OK with the way you do it, but just add a bit of a disclaimer or something that comparing sales is hard because of different/staggered release dates or something

I am confused, is this about the each consoles first 52 weeks on the market? Or about each consoles release to first full year and holiday. Cause one has already ended and I think the wii won and one will end at the end as of dec 31st this year.

If this is about the PS4 hitting 20M by the end of 2014, then I pretty much have nearly no doubt in my mind it could do it if its currently at 15M+. By the end of november it could very well be at 16.5M and all it has to sell worldwide in december is 3.5M? Come on, the PS4 seems to have that 20M number in the bag.
