Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Banning Xbox Owners for Fraudulently Refunding Destiny

After Bungie announced Destiny‘s upcoming The Dark Below DLC, many gamers became fed up with different points of the game – the price, the content, and largely the overall tone that they feel was misrepresented prior to launch. Some Xbox gamers, however, don’t like the PlayStation-exclusive content. Some asked for refunds using bogus reasoning, which Microsoft initially fulfilled. Now, upon discovering that many lied about their refund’s true reason, Microsoft is investigating all users who wanted a refund on the basis that they committed fraud.

It all started when Kotaku wrote a story on how Destiny‘s DLC “screws over Xbox players“. The story details how exclusive content in multiplatform games is a practice that should stop. Replying to the article, a user on Reddit cited it as their main reason for asking Microsoft for a refund, and many others followed suit, using excuses that don’t reflect their real reasons. When asked what excuse they should use, one user replied:

“Probably whatever you want. I told them I wanted to return it because it had no voice chat and no match-making for the majority of the game.”

Following this thread, one user decided to ask for a refund on the basis that Bungie and Activision falsely advertised parts of the game and that content was withheld from the Xbox One version. They showed the representative the previous thread of other users complaining about exclusive content and asking for refunds based on flimsy reasoning, and the representative had this to say:

“I totally understand, Dustin, and let me be honest with you on this one, and straightforward, making sure that we’re not hitting around the bush. I appreciate your kindness and being nice, despite of your request. I do apologize however we really cannot refund the charge for you just because others are asking for the refund for the game. We’ll have this investigated, as we already filed and submitted a ticket regarding the post in forums that was posted. We’ll have those profiles and gamertags check, as well, as this may be a form of fraud.”

In response, a Reddit moderator quickly posted a warning to stop other users from asking Microsoft for refunds:

“Do not try to lie to Xbox Customer service to get a refund on Destiny content. It is illegal. It is fraudulent. It can result in a permanent ban on your Xbox profile and a loss of all your digital content.”

All this spawned because a select few people thought they had the right to ask for a refund well after the game’s release simply because they didn’t like some aspect of it – be it the trailers before Destiny‘s launch, or the fact that Sony has some exclusive content. The situation has spiralled out of control. We’ll update as soon as we have more information on Microsoft’s follow-up investigation.

Damn people hated Destiny that much they're tricking MS support into giving them refunds

Should have bought it for the PS4 instead then :)

I don't see what the issue is. You really shouldn't lie about that kind of stuff in the first place. It's something you agree to in the wall-of-text known as the Terms of Service.

I miss the days where you could get a refund on bad games...

good if the people getting banned are lying

probably pretty safe to say they played it, completed it then thought "hey i could lie and get my money back despite having played it completely"
No doubt we're going to see a swathe of "i didn't lie but i got banned this is bullshit" youtube rants.

Always reminds me of when someone is shot and killed, they're always "a lovely friendly person well liked by the community" even when it's clearly not the case.

I find it funny that these people did not demand for a refund until after the beta and over a month after the final product's release.

I don't understand. How is that bannable, and how are they determining if someone is a liar or not?!? Is this a joke thread?

Regardless of the platform, you'll find buyer's remorse.

That game is gonna win awards for being so disappointing.

At least they wouldn't be spitting their dummies over the PS exclusive content.
