Forums - Gaming Discussion - what would you think about a mid gen hardware upgrade on a home console?

Why does Nintendo get a free pass with mid-gen hardware upgrades on handhelds that makes early gen units essentially obsolete for most future game releases, when if this was done with any home console the company would be eviscerated by the public and media? And if Sony tried it with PSP they would have been pilloried too.

surely the point of a console generation is that units bought on day one of the generation will be able to play last game released.

I don't think Nintendo got a free pass on their handheld. People are still pissed I'd imagine.

No.

Handheld market != console market.

What would you change on a mid-gen console revision, other than how powerful the damn thing is? Not much, I suppose.

(It'll work with the Wii U, but it would royally piss the userbase off. But, with the others? What would you change? The controller?)

Consoles... Nope and this includes Nintendo...

Consoles, along with their games, cost a lot more than handhelds do, twice the amount infact! (for hardware that is) And the reason I get a console is for a full 5 year cycle. The reason its okaysh for a handheld to do it is cause they are cheap and generally, much weaker than the consoles so a power boost with the new handheld can be justified to a degree but with consoles, its a lot less of an issue

I think it's fucking ridiculous and defeats the entire purpose of a console.

Justifying an upgrade to a $170 piece of hardware is much easier than justifying an upgrade to a $400 piece of hardware, and let's completely ignore the fact that a new iPhone comes out every single year...

Because they have never done this.

New 3DS has already launched, which future game releases make the current model obsolete?

Ummm, did I miss the part where the new 3DS models can play games that the old ones can't?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Thread says "what would you think about a mid gen hardware upgrade on a home console?" but it should really be "Why does Nintendo get a free pass with mid-gen hardware upgrades on handhelds..."

Oh man, why oh why :-/
