Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft will continue to invest in gaming as it’s important to core business

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella mentioned today at the quarterly earnings call that Microsoft remains committed to Xbox and gaming in general as the company is finalizing the sale of the Minecraft maker Mojang. Microsoft is eager to solidify its presence on multiple platforms through this acquisition. He also noted that Microsoft is committed to investing in this business segment as it drives growth in other Microsoft businesses such as Azure.

Nadella also linked Microsoft’s investments in Kinect and Xbox to the development and growth of Cortana and that the gaming console is a great value add to the company, overall.

Microsoft has posted better than expected figure for Xbox sales in the first quarter and the outlook for growth in Q2 is great considering the imminent launches of Sunset Overdrive and the blockbuster everyone is waiting for, Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

good to know, there needs to be a next gen xbox

Good! Cause the last thing we need is MS pulling out of the gaming business at the start of the next gen!

Wait, they're happy that their games are on other platforms? Microsoft going third party next gen confirmed?

Didn't sony invest a shit ton of billions to games that didn't do well due for not being mainstream enough on a console which didn't have good ports? Which led the 360 to win with software sales due for people who owned both, bought their multiplats on 360?  If microsoft decides to push out a ton of games on a console, which will be dragged down by the lack of Multiplats.. they will start loosing even more money..  It didn't work for Ps3 even after Ps2.. and people dislike the XB1 as it is. ( No fanboy flaming ) just sharing another perspective on it.

COD ruined a lot of game sales last gen... a lot of great games went to waste because of it.  and there will be a new mainstream game soon which will continue that trend. Microsoft should go multiplat if they wanna sell software. software makes the money, not the hardware.. atleast not at launch.. or after a lot of Pricecuts

Sooooo, the armchair CEO'S have been wrong yelling investors like they ever knew/know what was really going on???

Well, Microsoft technically can continue investing in gaming without a console...

When has MS not been about gaming as a core aspect of its business? Even before Xbox gaming was an important aspect of Windows, and it is a vital component of phone and tablet business now. The Xbox brand is now core to the gaming aspect of Windows, so even if the hardware disappears the Xbox brand will remain.

I don't necessarily see this as a vote of confidence or strong commitment to the Xbox gaming console. But it would take Xb one to have a truly disastrous generation (sub-20 million) for MS to not produce a 4th console.
