The U.S. version will be launched on November, 21 (a week before Black Friday, I guess). That is a good end of the year line up for Nintendo, Smash will probably do 3-4 million lifetime and at least 1,5 million in the gifts season I guess.

The GamePad comes with the system, so you need only buy 7 controllers.

If you still own any GameCube controllers you do not have to buy them. If you own any Wii remotes + nunchuks you do not have to buy them. If you own any 3DS with copies of Smash you do not have to buy them. It's entirely possible for someone to buy a Wii U and zero additional controllers and still be able to play 8-player Smash.
