Forums - Microsoft Discussion - "We confused people" - Phil Spencer on Xbox One's specs and media features

Did they think gamers wanted a TV Box?

Quit apologizing already. Nobody cares about the DRM stuff anymore. Most gamers have very short attention spans. It has all been forgotten.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

They focused too much in TV and non-gaming apps. Plus phil lead the team for $400 million NFL deal. Now they know games sell gaming console not non-gaming features.

$400M so broadcasters on national TV can refer to your product as "iPad". Best advertising money Apple never spent.

Who was confused? I wasn't confused. Only people who think Xb one is as powerful as PS4 are confused, and that confusion is only going to work in Xb one's favour.

And who would be confused about the media features? It's not like Xbox 360 owners are going to be thinking Xb one won;t have games so screw it I'm going with PS4.

What confused people was "hey, lower powered console here, but higher price, but here have Kinect." And what alienated people was "No, naughty, you are not allowed to sell your games or give them away."

The media features were and are a positive. But they are not really a selling point to gamers and so they are not something that will particularly work as a marketing point to gamers. And it's gamers who buy consoles, not movie and TV buffs.

I haven't watched much football this year, mainly just Patriots games.  Do you have a link to this?  I wanna see it!

You rarely find a man so honest that he is able to stand up for the decisions the company that employs him made.

Anyone who had a say in what happened deserves to be fired. Unforgiveable stupidity

while i do see where you are coming from in this point, i do not completely agree with that, because even though phil had a voice in the choice of what way to go in some directions he may not had a voice in all of the choices, he can only go with what he ended up with, the people above phil are the one vote of for or away of somthing else. that may not have been the best choice for the direction they chose. The fact they changed as fast as they did was a really good sign to show atleast Phil when he was apointed head was willing to put out there changes to the higher ups and hope they in fact listen to him and his team.

Many before Phil like robbie, Ed and ray all have talked about thing's like this happening while they worked on the xbox project's at Microsoft, firing everyone is not a good thing when you look at the results of what can happen when all the founding team heads of the xbox project inception decided to leave in one shape or form, and look what happened.

Think about that for a sec. all the main people who by the way were and are Gamer's, who thought of the concept and pitched the whole entire idea of the xbox platform the voice of the Gamer within Microsoft. Who spent hours and Hours in the design stages , who really went infront og Bill Gates to pitch the concept and idea to even get the platform off the ground, who really wanted to make a good game console based on windows DirectX being the unified driver of making a powerful entry point into the Game console market, with many of those same Gamer exec's who was at Microsoft for so many years all wanting to work on a dream project. have after over 10 years all have left Microsoft!

this was not really about trying to excuse the mess ups of execs like Phil in that point, but more on the lines of what we as gamers may want and what some of the gamer execs may want may not be what the higher ups over @ Microsoft may want

example:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/115775/Interview_Former_Microsoft_Exec_Fries_Talks_Xboxs_Genesis.php

this was not just Ed having these type of problems it was pretty much the entire xbox founding team , because the xbox project that many execs who did not really care for the concept than had to take a interest into it because it moved past proof of concept to being a verry viable platform, and as you can see these new blood execs may have had an imput into the direction that was not very good for the health of the platform.
