Forums - Sales Discussion - Bold Prediction: SSB.U Won't do much for Wii U.

Tagged games:

Why are most people happy to predict nasty wiiu things? MK8 gave a big push to WiiU and all the releases this year will do the trick for the holidays and early 2015. If Nintendo pushes WiiU, then WiiU can dominate this holiday season.

Around the Network

So Smash Bros. is an 'obscure game' now, then. How delightfully unexpected! This thread's golden.

Nintendo Network ID: Cheebee   3DS Code: 2320 - 6113 - 9046

Mario Kart is more than twice as popular as the smash brothers series, so I agree with your statement.  I'm sure somehow Nintendo will shoot themselves in the foot with it like they did leaving out Mario Kart classic battle mode for the Wii U (or the Wii U in general).  We'll see...

"It won't do much"? Super Smash Bros U will be far from obscure, especially with a HOLIDAY release. Will it outsell its 3DS counterpart? Probably not, but it'll sure sell millions of units lifetime either way.

I disagree with your prediction for reasons that I explained already in another thread.

Let me say this, the only market that will be affected by this (potentially) is Japan. Smash on 3ds in western markets is going to do significantly less then smash on wiiU.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Around the Network

Maybe with slight boosts everytime a big game comes out, we'll top Dreamcast sales by the time Zelda comes out.

Super Smash Smash Bros is a niche title ??? Well that's something new you learn everyday ... ^_^

Seriously though Smash may fail to sell WII U's for the reasons listed above and I totally agree but I think Smash is just as popular as MK is.

Sales say that Smash Bros was a smash hit (pun intended) in Japan ...

I don't think the 3DS version will be the definitive Smash Bros. Graphics have nothing to do with it, it's the controls. Console Smash simply has better controls than the handheld version. The circle pad isn't ideal. Plus, multiplayer, which is obviously a big reason to get Smash Bros. The only way to play MP with friends is if everyone has a 3DS, and can be annoying to setup even if everyone does. It's also not the most fun way to play with your friends in one room. None of that's an issue for the console version, and will still make it a worthwhile purchase. As for if it will still sky rocket Wii U sales, I don't know, but I don't think the 3DS version will impact the Wii U version's sales all that much. I've even seen a lot of people skipping the 3DS version because they know the Wii U version is going to be the superior version and they'd rather just get that.

Listen to this man.  Smash bros graphics have been good enough since Melee.  It's one game where it is all about the controls.

Personally I played the 3DS version and knew immediately that I was not going to be double dipping, I would be waiting for the Wii U version.  The controls aren't quite there for me, it's hard on the small screen and local multiplayer just can't be the same.

Why thank you. :P

I've been playing the 3DS version non-stop, but I'm playing it more to whet my appetite for the Wii U version because I know that will be the one I'll enjoy more. The circle pad just does not do the game justice. My plan was always going to be to get both versions of the game though. The existence of the handheld version had no impact on whether I'd be getting the console version or not.

As Bender would say, "Are you familiar with the old robot saying 'does not compute'?"

Calling Super Smash Bros. a "niche" or "obscure" title doesn't make much sense to me. The series is one of the more popular and critically-acclaimed series of the last two generations. Brawl sold over 12 million copies; Melee is still being played in competitive tournaments 13 years after release. The comparison to Tearaway is even more confusing. That game has yet to sell 500,000 copies. Smash Bros. for 3DS, out for less than a month, has already crossed 1 million.

Now, will Smash Bros. trigger an explosion in WiiU sales? Probably not. Together with some bundles, promotions, and the holiday shopping season, it should push the system to a healthy fourth quarter, though. That said, WiiU will probably come back down to Earth in early 2015.
