Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo and the NA market

The west likes Shooters, more specifically, first person multiplier shooters. Nintendo needs to create a great multiplier shooter with modern or futuristic combat.

They could easily expand the Metroid universe by creating a Halo type series with the Galactic Federation.

Yea because we need more of those on the market.

someone made this refference earlier but im going to do it also.   If Nintendo did the same shit as everyone else just like in the music industry we would not of had kings of their decades and genres like Nirvana, Hendrix, Elvis, if everyone played the same bubble gum goody good bullshit then we would not have originality and everything would be the same. Just like with Shooters if Nintendo made their own western shooter how would it stand out? It wouldn't because its just following the crowd in his suite and tie like everyother god damn wallstreet sheep.

M$ changed the game once they entered the console biz. After GCN, Nintendo's focus shifted to be "different & cheaper" than the competition. What's interesting, is with the Wii's surprise success, and M$ gaining market share from Sony's PS2 fanbase, Nintendo was in great position to further crush Sony. By releasing a proper next gen console, similar to what 360 did, Nintendo would have flourished with the crucial 1 year head start. Instead, they continued on their "different & cheaper" route.

Gamers or avg joes tend to think all these companies hate each other, but companies like Nintendo have different strategies in mind. Ninty is on record stating : they hate competition. so lets say Sony was forced out, could Ninty go toe to toe with M$? Definitely not. Reality is, Nintendo does not want to step on Sony's toes, to allow THEM to fight M$, while Ninty maintains their conservative/passive role. Now if M$ decides to leave the hardware sector, that's when you'll see Nintendo become aggressive with the western market again (focus on specs, online, etc), since the void left by MS would be too lucrative for Ninty to ignore or cede entirely to Sony.

The Fusion concept would continue on the "different & cheaper" route, while hopefully attracting more 3rd parties. The home dock's specs of the Fusion depends on if M$ is still in the HW biz. As far as what the future holds, the next gen will be the most interesting to me by far. I expect big changes...

It could keep closer to Metroid and not become a Halo clone, meaning it'll maintain vast exploration and other Metroid elements. That way it won't be just another FPS.

Using your music example, having a console without a shooter is like a band without a guitar.  It's a key component in today's market, and a component Nintendo pioneered with Goldeneye and Turok.  Nintendo needs a shooter.  Having one may not win over consumers, but not having one is pushing them away.  They need games in these key genres so that their unique software can push people over the top to purchase... without lamenting what's missing on the platform.

Nintendo has done things that majority don't like/or want. Simple as that. Regardless of how each side feels. You want better sales. You pretty much have to do similar things that MS/Sony does. Who knows, if the Wii U was basically a PS4, but with the gamepad. It might of done better. Meaning proper online features, power equal to the others, DLC content that people want/done right from the start, universal voice chat system, a friend list that can show you a number count, unified account system so we can play VC on 3DS and Wii U. etc.... Things like that.

I'm so glad Nintendo has money to hemoorage to keep them from having to go down the Sony/MS path just to appease to the banal tastes of American gamers.  Their brand doesn't match up with our culture right now for some reason (I can think of a few), but I don't need them to align themselves with values that don't represent the magic that is Nintendo.  Keep up the good work, Nintendo.  If all musicians played shit that everyone liked, we wouldn't have Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Flaming Lips, Nirvana, etc.

So Nintendo are like cute little rebels?

Personally, I think Nintendo of America as a whole has lost independent power, lack of Western targeted games and poor marketing decisions have cost it potential sales that they probably didn't need to break the bank over so much as just try things outside of the previous box they built for themselves that collapsed with the Wii in the middle of the last generation.

I am not saying they need to clone MS and Sony marketing habits but the fact is they failed to establish any sort of Identity with their more recent hardware and rarely give spotlight outside of Nintendo Direct videos to games that might go against the Mario style groove like they did in the glory days of NES through even the N64. They are more content to feed on games that almost sell themselves like the Mario franchise and Zelda then step up.

Console market is going through a big paradigm shift. Nintendo has isolated themselves for better or worse.

At this point going competing with Sony and microsoft for large third party support is a waste of time.

They need to continue to hone in on their niche and make it profitable while exploring other unique opportunities.
