Forums - Nintendo Discussion - OPINION: Nintendo needs to change their home console brand

They were trying to be cute, but ended up being stupid with WiiU. Wii2 would have been fine and great and eminently marketable. But they were never going to bring over the Wii multitudes, because most Wii buyers had moved on, either no longer gaming, or upgraded to a HD platform, or migrated to mobile platforms. But I think Wii2 probably would be knocking on the door of 10 million by now, if not passed it already. So they missed out on about 3 million in sales to date because of the stupid name IMO.

They also need an image makeover. Nintendo does not present as a "serious fun" gaming company, but rather a light and frivolous fun gaming company. And it seems "serious fun" is an important partner gaming culture. That's not to say light and frivolous fun isn't valuable or important, just that having an imagine being only that limits your market.

While I agree with what ur getting at, I do think their decisions to change their console brand name from GC to the wii was a good thing cause GC did terribly and they should change their name once again for their console next generation too cause the wiiU is doing terribly. But yea, they need to figure out an awesome name and just evolve the brand off of that!

Although, even till this day, my parents think all my consoles are Nintendos including the ones that are not lolll (Like ps3, psp and so on)

I'm pretty sure that has something to do with you and the consoles you buy or play most. Parents aren't very attentive when it comes to technology. >.<

You'd had to have lived or grown up in North America during the 80s/90s to understand the "call all videogames Nintendo" phenomenon.  Nintendo was so widely used as a synonym for videogames back then that "Nintendo" and "videogame" were literally used interchangeably.

At the time people were using terms like "Nintendo War" and it had nothing to do with today's console wars or Nintendo's own Famicom Wars series.  Nintendo War was a nickname given to the first Persian Gulf War in the US because of the new ways in which the war was being fought.

With the adoption of smart bombs, computerized weapons and other uses of technology people said that it was a new era in modern warfare and because of this the media likened the war to playing a videogame and the term "Nintendo War" was born. - http://archives.obs-us.com/obs/english/books/rawlins/moths/crystal/2.html

I think they should  go back to the " Entertainment System" brand!

Nintendo System (NS -> NS2 -> NS3 -> ... -> NS7) would be great.

I agree entirely. Unless they can come up with some truly marvelous new idea like the Wii was in its time, they should go back to their roots. NES2 or NES3 would be an ideal name. They should go back to their original color palette as well, such as grey/black/red or the four color SNES theme that N3DS is borrowing. The system should be powerful , the controllers classic (though perhaps with a small phone-like touchscreen, and the marketing mature. Initiate a couple new western IP's now for its launch (a FPS shooter like the Goldeneye of its day and a cool 3P adventure like Assassin's Creed - maybe Gunfire would do it?) as well as 2 new Japanese IP's ( a JRPG by Mistwalker with real classic FF feel would be ideal, and a Castlevania-like action adventure). Lastly EAD Tokyo makes an amazing 3D Mario for launch with cool worlds and online multiplayer. Sell the NES3 as a true gamer's console, with Mario, the shooter, the JRPG, etc. appealing to those that loved classic Nintendo consoles in the past. Nostalgia could bring a lot of old Nintendo gamers back if the system is sold as a true high-end adult-oriented Entertainment System. I see this as their best option, barring a more unique idea.
