Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can/will Nintendo ever see the Wii + DS height ever again?

Doubt it... Specially DS levels but who knows, maybe they can find the magical fairy that made those two a massive success once again but it will be extremely rare

It wasn't a magical fairy or a lucky strike.

It was Nintendogs, Brain Age, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play, supplemented with 2D Mario, Mario Kart and Pokemon, with a little help from Smash, 3D Mario and Zelda.

That's more lucky strikes than duty-free will allow and more magical fairies than a real Zelda game.

1. New Super Mario Bros. 2006 Platform Nintendo 11.15 9.00 6.49 2.86 29.50

5. Pokémon Diamond / Pearl Version 2006 Role-Playing Nintendo 6.35 4.41 6.04 1.36 18.16

DS 'only' got 4 20 million+ sellers, so no, unless it's a Wii Sports style mass-bundling, they can't sell 20 million+ copies of one game on handhelds anymore, because they'll never have a handheld tat rivals the DS's success.

Numpty.

It was those games that made the DS a success, not the other way round. What you're essentially saying is

'they can't make software that sells 20M because they'll never make a 20M system seller'

the 3DS has the sequels to two of the four 20 million+ sellers (at least, I don't know about Nintendogs.) Yet none of them are close to those numbers. Obviously those games largely drifted on the incredible success of the DS. What you're saying is akin to saying that

'it wasn't the motion controls that sold the Wii, it was Wii Sports that did it'

And the DS didn't have the fierce competetion of phones and tablets that the 3DS has now.

2. Is it possible to sell 20M on a dedicated handheld in the era of smartphones and tablets?

Many people might answer no to the second question. To those people I would ask...

3. Can Minecraft sell 20M on home consoles when everyone has a smartphone/tablet/PC/netbook/laptop that can easily play Minecraft?

If the answer to question 3 is yes, then the answer to q2 is yes. That leaves q1.

Why is it so sure that a game can be sold 20 million times on ONE platform (q2 = a dedicated handheld) if a game can be sold 20 million times on SEVERAL platforms (q3 = home consoles; 360+PS3+XBO+PS4)?

Or has Minecraft reached 20m units on ONE console platform yet? And most smartphones/tablets can't "easily" play Minecraft, the pocket edition is a very gimped version, even compared to the 360 and PS3 versions.

Everyone knows the Wii sold because Nintendo purposefully constrained supply to create a Wii-mania. They spoke about it for years before release and tested it with DS. Why do you think it was always 'sold out'?

Huh?

Because the motion controls in Wii Sports were the unique selling point that made Wii sports (and the Wii console) that successful.

Wii Sports with gamepad controls would have been just another sports video game and would have probably not appealed to millions of casuals.

Because the d-pad controller was the unique selling point that made Super Mario Bros and the NES successful.

SMB with keyboard and joystick controls would have been horrible and would probably not appeal to millions of casuals.
