Forums - Politics Discussion - Scotland: NO to Independence. 55.3% NO, 44.7% YES. Salmond resigns, woo hoo!

It might seem like I don't know what I'm talking about. It was a respectable effort that Scotland asked for their independence. But would an independence be viable in a still recovering economy nowadays?

Just so disappointed. It would of been an interesting time ahead although obviously risky. I think the currency issue was a big part of why no won.

The vote should of been devo max or independence but no our politicians can't guarantee jackshit. They say want change but don't want bugger all really. They will try and avoid decentralisation of parliament most likely. Although that may be a problem for them cos if the issue isn't solved properly. Independence may come up again.

But seriously why would the result be any different with all the negativity from the mainstream press, most politicians and even the stock exchange? People didn't know who was more right. No may have won but i expect nearly everyone wants something out of this now although by voting yes they would of got everything anyway.

Why would any reasonable person want to leave the greatest nation in the history of the world?

Except we no longer are the greatest. That time has long gone.

I hate this! They want more independence powers but won't take full independence as long as they can milk the English taxpayer.

I don't get why people assume this. Apart from free university, how are they supposedly milking us English people?

One of the many unknowns. You are right to question it as many in the UK, Scotland and abroad wondered the same thing, that being 'Is now really a good time?' I happened because a nationalist party got majority it a local government. The same will occur is any of the nationalist parties across Europe get voted in, they may want indpendence from the EU. Countries populations have sadly latched on to Nationalist Parties more sine the financial crisis.

Hmm, pie.

Booo, down with the dirty redcoats!

lol.

But seriously, this may turn to something interesting as you have a significant split between the two parties. I wonder how this will affect political election in the future. I just hope the rest of the UK doesn't decide to be a bunch of dicks to the Scots because they had a referendum like what happened in Canada and Quebec.

For some, the free higher education is enough, a Scottish person studying in the rest of the UK doesn't have to pay but a English, Welsh, Irish person studying in Scotland does. A horrible practice. They should have done it so it is free education in Scotland not for Scottish. That would have promoted people from the rest of the UK not only try to get into Scottish education but added populations and reason to be there could have created jobs. People might have settled there and paid into the local economy.

I don't agree with the milking thing mind. United in all nations, we all pay in and we all get out, just in different ways.

Hmm, pie.

That's great news! They would be stupid to leave the UK.

Congrats to the no camp but I can't help feeling sorry for the many passionate people who wanted independence. It will never happen in their lifetime now.

Also, two last things.

Salmond isn't going anyway unless he gets voted out in the next Scottish elections

And also that incredible turnout of 86% isn't probably happening again unless far more is done to get people involved and make it feel worthwhile to them. If anything it proves people do care about politics but most of it is dictated to them and they aren't really listened to as the establishment is very out of touch with society.
