I don't think region locking has ever affected me. I've never imported a game from Japan nor would I ever considering most Japanese games are RPGs which are very often dialogue-heavy. That pretty much gives them a language 'lock'. For those who can read Japanese, I do hope they speak with their wallets and buy a Vita.

There have been periods in which American Ninty gamers were begging Ninty to release in US games already released not only in Japan, but also in EU: region-free would have granted their wishes without having to wait for Ninty to stop turning a deaf ear to them. And EU versions always include English ones (btw the real stuff, with all its ues not amputated from words and all its esses not turned into zeds by some crazy Zorro passing by   )

On a related note, I recently received a reply fron NoA after I emailed them about region-locking the new 3DS. Their reply was as follows:

"Thank you for writing. I would like to first apologize for the delay in our response. We have been especially busy and thank you for your patience as we reply.

Regarding the topic of your email, I can certainly understand why you'd be interested getting more details about the new addition to the Nintendo 3DS Family of systems. However, the system you are referring to has only been announced by Nintendo of Japan for release in that region. Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing; as such, I have to inform you that Nintendo of America does not currently have plans to launch these products in the Americas this year. Furthermore, you should be aware of the following points with regards to importing Nintendo systems and games from a different region:

. The AC Adapter included with the Nintendo 3DS XL was designed to be compatible only with the voltage and electrical outlet of the region or country in which it is to be sold. If the system is sold in Japan, the AC Adapter will work in those outlets but not outlets in, say, Brazil or the United States.

. We recommend against using the AC adapter with voltage transformers or any other equipment. The AC Adapter was meant to be plugged directly into the electrical outlet on your wall.

. The Nintendo 3DS XL will only play games available in the same region where it is sold. Games purchased in the Americas will not work on  a Japanese system and vice versa.

. Finally, the warranty will not apply when using the system in the Americas.

I realize this is not the answer you were hoping to hear, but rest assured that your interest in systems like the ones newly announced by our Japanese counterparts has been documented and forwarded to the relevant departments, so your feedback will be heard."

This email is encouraging and I do hope more people learn to actually send out PERSONALIZED emails as opposed to just signing some online poll. Let your voices be heard people! Also, if you plan on sending out an email about region locking BE SURE TO REMIND NINTENDO that the PLAYSTATION VITA DOES NOT HAVE REGION-LOCKING!

On a related note, I also received a reply on porting Fatal Frame 5:

"Additionally, I'd like to address the question you asked in your previous email. While I can appreciate your enthusiasm for the Fatal Frame series, I can only confirm that at this time Nintendo of America still has no plans to publish Fatal Frame. The details of why this game is not being released here are not available to us, so I'm unable to answer any additional questions you might have. Your comments are important to us, so I want to let you know that they will be added to the record of feedback concerning this product for review and careful consideration by the appropriate personnel here at the company."

Start being proactive people and write e-mails. Then publish the replies and encourage others to e-mail and publish their replies as well. It's not just your wallet that speaks. Also, be professional with your e-mails: no foul language. If you expect to be taken seriously, write forcefully while maintaining a polite tone.

Yep, very sensible advices. It looks like recently Europe has been treated better about games ports on Ninty platforms, and it's also vaguely given away from the reply you received that NoA for some reasons we don't know, needs to justify any request it makes to Ninty Japanese HQ for any games but the biggest ones stronger than NoE needs to (despite Americans buying more games than Europeans), let alone discussing international policies like region lock. About the games it particularly puzzles me that they kept Americans waiting for games that having been ported to EU already had an English version ready, so there wasn't any valid reason to delay them. About region lock, with DS they were still doing the right thing, even if it doesnt't affect every user, it makes more sense for a portable to be region-free, I still can't understand why they switched to do the wrong thing about this already since DSi, even less considering that globalisation and online commerce would make it less and less accepted by users, and only some movies producers, for their obsolete business model, still need it, but games really never did. Obviously, OTOH, unless they provide consoles with universal power adapters, it makes sense they don't give HW warranties for HW used in regions different from their intended ones, as they cannot offer warranties for third party power adapters, but this doesn't in any way force region lock on SW.
