Forums - Gaming Discussion - History repeating: Xbox One is following PS3′s rocky first year

Repeating itself right up to but excluding 1. Catching up, 2. Surpassing and 3. Dropping first party bombshells like GOTG TLOU.

Because Xbox doesnt have nearly as many territories where it has a history of success like Playstation does.

Europe is and always has been Sonyland, PS1 was the first hugely successful console in Europe and they have been the preferred choice ever since. Xbox has little no chance being successful in Japan with the first 2 consoles averaging about one million each while Playstation has always sold 10m+ in Japan. Also in developing countries Playstation has always been the brand of choice.

Basically Xbox only has America where it can possibly stage a comeback against PS4 but even if it does win America, it likely wont be able to offset the difference in Europe+Japan+Rest of World

Well those territories weren't always Playstation dominated, these things change. Even without them Xbox can do well in new upcoming territories as well such as South America or China. Yeah they won't be as big as the current big ones yet but they can still help out.

Yes they were, Europe wasnt very big on consoles until Playstation released, developing countries have always preferred Playstation as well. Japan ur right but Xbox has almost no chance of being successful there.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

There is some difference though:

-Playstation is a stronger brand worldwide and this was something that helped PS3 a lot.

-Although PS3 was expensive,it had some "future proof" technologies that X360 didn't have like bluray player, native WIFI

There is much difference between PS3 and XB1:
PS3 was $200 more expensive than the X360
Blu-ray
It was as powerful as the X360 but the structure was complex for the developers
Better first party games
Released one year after the X360
Playstation brand is very popular worldwide
She dominated in Europe and Japan despite all these problems.

Xbox One was $100 more expensive than the PS4 - Not a huge difference, they were both more expensive.
They didn't have much to start with, Xbox One could still have some great stuff later in the Xbox Ones life. Also, that's purely opinion...
I think that's more to do with how succesfully Sony dealt with the problems though, which is what this article is suggesting, if Microsoft can do as effectively as Sony did in making up for the problems it can still do well. Besides that the PS3 lost to the Wii in Japan, so didn't really dominate there.

$100 is a huge difference and the XB1 at the same price as the PS4  is still beaten by the PS4 in NA (
the only territory where the X360 was very dominant)

I spoke only for the X360 vs PS3.

They really weren't though. You said yourself Europe wasn't big on consoles before Playstation. How could those places have preferred Playstation before it even existed?

Obviously meaning ever since Playstation came about, those territories have preffered Playstation over the competition.

A major difference is X1 has absolutely no chance of catching up and/or surpassing PS4, nor do they deserve to

Why not? If the PS3 could do it, why is it outside the realm of possibility for the X1 to do it?

If MS focuses on providing quality first-party titles, I don't see why the console won't be looked back on as a success, similar to how people now view the PS3. Some of these responses are ridiculous, it hasn't even been a year yet.

None of these really mattered last time around when the PS3 shambled out of the gate. X360 managed to make it's presence felt in Europe even after the first Xbox didn't set the world on fire. And even just based on the 360's US and European sales, it's practically tied to what the PS3 is at the moment, even with the PS3's supposed global brand recognition.

These things aren't set in stone. Average customers aren't so blinded by brand loyalty, they just buy whatever their friends say they should. By the way, I've never owned any of the Xbox consoles, I've always gamed on either Playstation or Nintendo consoles. I just hate premature arrogant statements like "it can't" and "it won't". You can't predict the future accurately. Maybe there's a Naughty Dog-style success story in the X1's future.

There’s absolutely no reason why Microsoft can’t get itself back on form, shoulder-to-shoulder with Sony. There are already signs of improvement – Titanfall is a great exclusive to associate your console with, Games With Gold is getting better every month, hardware sales are up (and manufacturing costs will drop) as Kinect has been jettisoned.

Exclusive on pc/xbox360/xbox one. Yeah, why not.

Hardware sales up ? By 40k more than april after a price-cut ? With 5 weeks against 4 ? It will be worse and worse as day pass, until a new pricecut or halo 5, xbox one even have a hard time against the wiiU, so don't even talk about ps4, it's ridiculous.

Xboxone lost against the ps4, it's already over. Now the war is between Microsoft and nintendo for the 2nd place.

The PS3 had some obvious benefits over the 360, it was for a long time the cheapest blueray player, offered true 1080p video streaming... And for games, the ps3s hardware and the 360s hardware both had benefits and weaknesses compared to one another (however the 360 was a lot easier to develop for, and in most common cases had the upper hand)

the xb1 is only weaker for games, offer no real benefits as far as media goes ( people have blueray and streaming already)

Good article. MS has made alot of great decision for the later half of this spring and if they continue, the console race will tighten up. Just give me lots of great 1st party titles and I don't care how much you sell :).

Yeah it is a big difference between Sony/MS...

-1) First of all the brand loyalty,  people love PS.

  - Handheld market:  The Ps vita is dominating the market from day one with selling a whopping 30.000 units a week
while the 3DS only manage to sell  20.000 units a day.

  - Console market:      Same story, the PS3 has been dominating from day one and while the Wii the barely managed to sell 100 Million units and the
X360 barely manage to sell more than a laughable 82 Million units the PS3 sold a worldshocking +82.600.000 units

2 )   Sony knows how to do business:

 - 10 years ago Sony was nothing else than a small company  that  in value was worth less than for example 1 company called Apple

 - Today Sony's value is worth more than for example +10 companies together:

3D Realms
7 Studios
Bizarre Creations
BottleRocket
Clover Studios
Deep Silver Vienna
Ensemble Studios
Factor 5
Game Republic
GRIN
Helixe
Hudson Entertainment
Incognito Entertainment
 Midway
 Ninja Studio
Pandemic
Realtime Worlds
Team Bondi
THQ

Do you really need more reasons?

Summary  => SONY IS GAMES <3
