Sounds like an honest mistake.
No matter how big the financial troubles, it sounds unlikely they can´t pay for the website :).
Never heard of automatic payments. Or maybe make a phone call before you take a big website offline.
They work fine now, weird story. Although maybe not so weird when you figure in my water company kept sending me threatening reminders that an automatic payment of $ -75 failed and that I had to find another way to pay them a negative amount.
the problem is big... they dont cut off a noname blog. they cut of a international company, an important partner.
i think they would have called sony if it was just a one time mistake. they havnt paid for some time i guess...

I work for a internet firm and this has happened to us too. A domain expires and it goes dead, we laugh and get it up and running again.
