Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anyone else tired of the "indie boom"?

I don't get whats wrong with some people these days. Why should having more options and variety ever be something bad? I mean if you hear naughty dog/ubisoft say they aren't making uncharted/assassins creed respectively cause they wanna make an indie game instead then yeah, you can get riled up.

As it stands, how about this... rather than have issues with how many of them are coming to market, how about you just don't buy or better yet, look at what you aren't interested in or want. You can stick to all your AAA games or what not.

Sometimes people talk like they are forcing anyone to do anything.

I don't understand why. Most of them (there are exceptions as with everything) weren't as good as the best indies or best AAAs and yet cost the same exact price as AAAs

At least indies don't rip you off

No Indies rip me off the most because if I Don't enjoy the game I Can't go return it. I'm more willing To pay full price for a game here then a cheap Indie download price because we get 1 week to Return it for a full refund at Eb Games.

A-fucking-men

People are so self-centered that just because they don't like them they feel like nobody should be able to play them.

Nope, not at all.

So there's a lot of them and a large amount are crap. That's games in general in a nutshell since I started gaming in ~ 1994.

I'd happily sit through this indie boom for quite a while longer as long as there's gems here and there. And not even gems. There's plenty of stuff out there that I'd say is mechanically; aesthetically or just in general quite a mediocre game that I can have a lot of fun with. Which is just the same way I feel about various Japanese or otherwise boxed releases.

I'd prefer to have the mid-tier of gaming back, but I much prefer indie as a tier to AAA.

Most indies suck so less indies games certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.

Most AAA are shitty too. Less wouldn't be a bad thing too. :P

Yeah, it's completely mystifying.  But, we saw the same kinds of complaints with mods (nevermind that mods, as well as indies have ratings systems, user reviews/comments etc...).  I think people just want good titles to fall in their laps, which kind of explains why shit AAA games do so well.  I guess the problem with indies is people don't have commercials to tell them what to buy.

That is not logical to say, sorry. Less indies would mean less good indies as well. Just ignore the ones you don't like, they don't affect you in any way.

There is a problem with that philosophy though. Take a look at that app store for example, hundreds (maybe even thousands) of crappy copies of popular games and 2 or 3 really good games, the problem with that though is because you have SO many bad games, people will ignore the good ones, it has happen a lot in smartphones games.

Unless you get a big marketing push from a big company, or get extremely lucky, those actually good indie games won't receive the praise they deserve. It affects the whole industry because talented small studios won't even bother and the crappy studios which are just looking for a quick cash will thrive.

Will consoles become like the app store or google play? maybe, at this point it kind of look like it will happen in the long run.

For diversity. AAA means fewer games, fewer genres.

For example I love Valkyria Chronicle, Civilization, Heavy Rain, Starcraft, FZero, etc. I would be pleased to get mid tier games in these genres. For any subgenre, AAA means no game or once a generation , and indy game means lack of funds or appeal to make the game. With due respects, Indy game is more about finding, creating or following a new niche genre. I'm talking about not popular enough mainstream genres.

Isn't that one of the reasons the console gaming market crashed in the U.S? hundreds of crappy and shovelware everywhere, of course there is basically no chance of that happening again, the internet is now a thing so the chances of people buying bad games is much much lower than in the 90s...although the internet didn't stop flappy bird for becoming a huge success.

In any case, like I mentioned in my previous posts, unless you get lucky or have a marketing push, good indie games will be left in the dust, making talented developers less and less motivated to make games (after all people make games for money), and the quick cash grabbers will have a gold mine in their hands, basically what is happening right now in the mobile market.

There just aren't enough mid-tier games. There are a few cases where people mix them in with indie, though. That sucks.
