Forums - Movies & TV - Edge of Tomorrow has a 90 % on Rottentomatoes.com but still Bombed at the North American Box office. People Hating on him for his Religous beliefs is NOT cool!

The movie was Fantastic......
one of my top 5 movies of the year so far.......................

What about Johnny Depp? His movies have been flopping as of late, but as far as I'm aware, I don't think he's hated.I believe we're at the time when only franchises sell at the box office. Just look at the best box office performances as of late: all series, superhero movies,  and book films. Tom Cruise got a break with MI4 & Johnny Depp will too with Pirates 5.

His beliefs don't deserve any special treatment versus the rest.  South Park wasn't a problem until they started making fun of scientology.  I have a problem with how he tried to use his star power to try and silence the critique then having said nothing about it before.

I don't care how good of an actor he is, who he really is, glares right through it and I just won't spend any money that will end up in his pocket.

Well those are your beliefs and I am not trying to get you to spend money on him if you do not like him.

But I will say that Scientology is obviously something that is very near and dear to his heart. The same thing happens when Athiests try to get Religion taken away from Library name titles, etc. They feel very heavily about it and it probably wastes a lot of the Legal system time and the American governments money. But it is something they care about.

Gun ownership is legal, yet many try to ban it. They are fiercly against guns in America.

No differant than Cruise. Even though you and I do not understand how in the world anyone could listen to Scientology, it obviously hit a nerve with him and now he is hooked.

Same as people on this site defending their favorite Game system, even though sometimes they should not. A company cannot always be great, but they still defend it to the end. Sometimes a ban.

Why is Mr. Cruise any different?

Why did he not try to save the planet, get drinking water to Africa, stop other offensive South Park episodes. etc? Because usually, when you pick a cause, you pick one that is important to you.

I usually donate to Environmental campaigns. Even though I could donate to The hungry in New york, or something else. I know they all need my help, but they are not my priority. This is not entirely the same thing ,just an example, and I hope it helps get my point of view across.

Uh, those aren't 'just' my beliefs, they happen to be one of the founding principles of the United States Constitution.  No special treatment for any religion, period.  I have a problem with him using his star power to circumvent the law.

As far as what's near and dear to his heart, exceptional claims require exceptional evidence.  Until such a time as any evidence is provided that is actually testable, I don't care what's near and dear to his heart.  Just because someone believes it, doesn't make it real.

Never heard of it, poster looks stupid. And I'm probably the target demographic.

Wow. This thread really got off the rails.

Anyway, How is the movie faring on international markets? Perhaps it might be able to recover its budget and make a profit.

Sorry, believe me, I could've kept going in far more detail, but I was aware that we were straying from the OP, and kept it brief.  He just keeps responding :)

Whenever I watch a Tom Cruise film I can't stop thinking about how tiny he is and what camera trickery they used to make him look normal.

Scientology The Movie should be his next project. It's more far fetched and science fictiony than most of the stuff he's churned out recently.

Speaking as someone who despises 80-90% of the garbage at theatres these days, I can honestly say it was a mostly well done and highly entertaining movie (despite its absurd anime-esque plot).

In regards to Tom Cruise, the man gets way too much hate. I wouldn't call him a great actor or anything, but he usually can be counted on to give a solid performance. His religious beliefs should be immaterial. Besides, the sad truth is that 99% of Hollywood is crazy (mostly ultra left wingers, social justice warriors, and religious nuts that are no more or less crazy than Cruise).

Scientology itself can hardly be called more crazy than any major religion. The only reason people despise it so much is because it is the new kid on the block, and all of the things they do to people that speak out against them (persecuting non-believers is hardly a new thing though for a religion though). I'll even compliment Scientology in that they understand (probably for the wrong reasons but still...) that the psychology/psychiatry nonsense that is passed off as science these days is ruining countless lives. I think myself, and most atheists for that matter would see Scientology's "thetans" as no more bonkers than "immaculate conception."

My wife and I went to see it last Tuesday. We both thought it was a great movie.

All people(including myself) see is "New Tom Cruise Movie". Sorta like people see "New Mario Game". It's not taken on its merits but face value, and Tom Cruise has a unlikeable face in the states.
