Forums - Nintendo Discussion - No E3 Conference for Nintendo this year - Mistake or not?

Should there be a Nintendo E3 conference?

Yes, absolutely, crazy for not bothering! 354 50.79%

No, they don't need one and the ND suffices 162 23.24%

I'll wait to see how it all goes 178 25.54%

And this is just the beggining.

Stepping out of what's become nothing more than an over-the-top spectacle for bragging rights is likely the smarter move for Nintendo, especially since there seems to be less of a need to directly compete with Microsoft and Sony.

I would just like to add this comment from Dale North over at Destructoid:

"The media are more likely to do deep coverage of streamed conferences and announcements, actually"

This was in response to people saying that the media would gloss over the Nintendo conference because of its format...

The media are also more likely to do deep coverage of larger, more culturally-relevant, famous events than they are to do of smaller, newer, less-established events. They are particularly more likely to do 'deep coverage' of events that aren't designed in a manner that feels like a deliberate snub to journalists.

Conclusively, we have once again stumbled across a case of Nintendo overestimating the importance of quality and content at the expense of mass appeal and commercial success.

The bautiful tragedy of Nintendo's life.

We forum go-ers (the only people who whine about this stuff) are all going to be watching it anyway, so no it really doesn't matter.

So we are the only people in the world who matter? Yes, WE will be watching it anyway. An expanded audience of less dorky people won't be. That's what I'm saying. It's not like Nintendo couldn't have done both of the things it is planning on doing. It is in a situation now where it needs to do far more than what is expected.

You missed my edit! You shouldn't care if other people watch or not is the point!

The Digital Event sounds grand - if they can pull off something out of the ordinary - like the promo video - providing entertaining and information - then it could be a breakout success.

I'll do the sensible thing - by waiting until I see it in action and then bitch about it afterwards.

The people who watch Nintendo's live feeds are the people who are going to get all of Nintendo's main games, regardless.

Most of the people watching Sony's conference live are also going to get their system. If not, you can spend three minutes reading a recap instead of watching for 1 hour. There's of cource the odd exception, but there's exceptions for those viewing Nintendo's videos as well.

This is a video game business site. We are discussing this conference choice as a business decision of Nintendo's. That's what this entire thread is about. If you want to defend them because YOU personally will be unaffected, then go to GoNintendo: people there seem thrilled.

Also, if there is where the money is going, I'll all for it.

Not gonna lie. This video has me now curious about Nintendo at E3! And as an average consumer, I can tell you that most of us do not watch E3, we may just read the news on games. Seriously, who wants to sit for 2 hours to see blah blah blah.

Many more people who aren't super passionate about games will read about Sony's conference in the technology or entertainment section of their news than will hear about Nintendo's.

Any gamer should agree that Nintendo Direct-esque videos are the best way of showcasing new and upcoming video games. They give you trailers, developer interviews and raw information about the software as development progress is made, without the many distractions that otherwise tends to plague promotional broadcasts. However, the great commercial impact that each years E3 conference tend to have proves that a great deal of gamers does in fact not think this way, and is an indicator of how important a strong E3 presentation has become for the company at hand in today's gaming industry.

Conclusively, we have once again stumbled across a case of Nintendo overestimating the importance of quality and content at the expense of mass appeal and commercial success.

As Rol pointed out, E3 2011 didn't stop the 3DS from performing poorly, and E3 2012 didn't help the Wii U, so they must not be having much of an impact for Nintendo atleast. I agree with most everything else though!
