Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What if the Wii U was never called "Wii U"?

Would it sell better?

Absolutely 179 49.72%

Not too much 118 32.78%

Nope 63 17.50%

Total:360

They named the new xbox, one. That is stupid but it is selling and at the rate it is going it will probably outsell the wii u just like the ps4 is doing. So it is less the name more the features it does not have.

It depends on what name they would have given it. I would have liked "Nintendo U" with a red theme instead of blue.

Whats wrong with the blue theme?

Nothing, I just think red would have looked cooler.

Nowhere near as consumer friendly, very aggressive colour. Just as well you're not in charge!

Well lots of people are aggressive. Remember Hiter?!

What if Wii never existed and Iwata wake up without legs?

He'd be fine. Nintendo games have plenty of legs to spare.

It would have sold a shit ton more unless its something even more retarded like Wii One

Or... One Wii!

Remember the Wii Stream rumors that were going around?

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

I think it would sell a lot better. PSVita also could have better sales if it had another name in my opinion, I know some people that think it is some health product.

It would be sitting at 20 million in sales, and all 3rd party games would have been developed from the ground up on its architecture. Yeahhhh.......that's what would have happened. Prove me wrong, bra!

Not much would have happened. I'm still of the belief that the name wasn't that big of an issue.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

Not at all.

"Super Nintendo" was fine but "Super Wii" sounds ridiculous to me; like something a kindergartner would come up with. Not that WiiU is a whole lot better but at least the "U" logo looks pretty cool.

"Wii HD" has the best ring to it but it just would've caused confusion so "Wii 2" was the way to go, not just for the name but for the whole direction. If Nintendo had just launched a "Wii 2" for $249 with a Wiimote/nunchuck/pro controller and later introduced the Gamepad separately with a game for $89 (Balance Board style) they would be in a much better place right now regarding both sales and profits.

It should have had a different name...even Wii 2 would have been better. Just so that the average consumer would know that it's a totally NEW console...not just an attachment for the Wii (a system which had a ridiculous number of attachments so it's not surprising that they would just think the gamepad was a tablet add-on like the U-Draw). I worked in electronics at Walmart for a long time, and it was AMAZING the amount of confusion that already existed between DS and 3DS (don't even get me started on 2DS...SO glad I had already left to avoid having to try and explain THAT)...and what the difference was and which games worked for which system. It took a long time before people stopped asking stupid questions because of that naming fiasco (never mind the very similar game cartridge cases). So you think Nintendo would have learned...but no, they did an even WORSE naming. Thankfully I only worked at Walmart for like eight months after the Wii U came out...but the majority of people thought they could buy NSMBU for their Wii, or that the gamepad was an optional tablet. They would be SHOCKED at the price, asking why it was so expensive, not realizing it was a brand new system. It was just such a blunder. As Wii gets phased from shelves like DS did, it will help and get a little better, but there's no doubt in my mind that it significantly lowered Wii U's chances right out of the gate.
