Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the Wii U gaining respect as the next gen progresses ?

As a WiiU owner, I can say that I have no more respect for it now than I did 2 months ago when I didn't have one. If anything, maybe less. This console should have come out 3 years ago ad it would have been accepted and sold well. It would have even had 3rd party support. Now, it's too little too late.

It is near the end of the end....

Possibly the best answer on this thread.

Wii U gaining respect?

Let's see:

Wii selled more than its competitors

Gave 10 bi of profit alone.

Recieved the most selled game of all time(wii sports) and one of the most acclaimed game of all time(SMG/SMG2).

Recivied the majoroty of the jokes from the announcment to the end of the production(remenber that mass effect comic?). Till today everyone call it "luck".

So, even if the wiiu start to sell better and outsell all the competitors, and get the best games, no, will not have the respect of the majority. In fact, as the generation seems to go on, i believe that will only be forgotten more and more.

There is actually only one way that i see that the jokes stoping: the closure of the playstation and xbox division while nintendo mantains wiiu production. If nintendo remains the only plattaform where people can play in a console, it will gain a ton of people interested in playing games on TVs, and thats a lot. Of course, the chance of this happen is very low.

inb4 "ha, kepping dreaming""nintendo will go down 2 times before this hapopen, fanboy".

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

I don't think that it's the Wii U gaining respect as much as the XB1 is losing it. Despite being more in line with the PS4 from technical standpoint it's sales are sliding to Wii U levels. Things are only going to get worse now that the PS4 is available in Japan. The Wii U is going be niche. I don't see how Nintendo can gain much ground at his point. I just hope it sells at least well enough to stay on retailer shelves.

as bad as XB1 is selling at the moment, all it needs is massive  price cut, 349$ with out kinect will get them back on track.

this. fact is xone is doing better than Wii U in the same time fram at a much higher price. it still selling better without Japan and there are still things they can do to sell more. Cant really say that for WIi U.

Japan is a non-issue for the XB1. It's not going to sell there regardless. The fact that the XB1 with far better 3rd party support is selling at near Wii U levels is troubling. Especially in it's traditional US and UK strongholds.

problem with the Xb1 is its competation is the ps4, it's designed better, more powerful  and 100$ cheaper, why would gamers that know this choose the Xb1, that's why the xb1 is selling  at wiiu levels.

Yes, when MK8, Smash, X and Bayonetta 2 come out. As of right now most people still don't give a shit.

If software was so good, it'd be selling better than it is. To answer the ? No. It's still the laughing stock of this gen.

Umm.....no. Quality software does not equel good sales. There are plenty of good games that received good reviews and were liked by gamers but completely bombed. A perfect example of this is Okami. In fact, I believe that was considered game of the year for 2006. It bombed and caused a studio to be shut down. Marketing is what sells a game and if a game is exclusive to a particular platform, then successful marketing of that platform is what will help sell games. In Okami's case, the PS2 was already very successful. Okami's marketing however was just okay or could even be considered poor when compared to the red carpet treatment Capcom would have given to a Resident Evil game or a Devil May Cry game. In Wii U's case, the games themselves aren't marketed badly, but the system is so nobody wants to buy it.

As for the laughing stock of this generation, I think all three companies deserve that prize. Nintendo can't seem to successfully market consoles even though they're geniuses at marketing handheld systems. Sony is having a lot of success with PS4 but still might go bankrupt in two years, and then the guy who publicly proclaimed that he would sell off the Xbox division if he were Microsoft's new CEO was just hired by Microsoft to run the Xbox division. It also seems like Xbox One will require some damage control PR at least several times a year from now on. So I don't think Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft can hold their heads high right now.

So lemme get this straight, a games console is selling poorly because the hardware is such that nobody wants it. But the games on the console are great. Just not great enough to get ppl to want to buy the hardware?

The days when that one great game could sell millions of consoles are over. Marketing is everything. Think about it this way. Why are people buying the PS4? There aren't that many standout exclusives. A lot of people seem to be complaining about PS4 games as oppose to praising them. Both Wii U and Xbox One actually had a better lineup of games this past holiday. Logically, the PS4 shouldn't be selling that well at all. It's selling because Sony made everybody want one. They marketed the PS4 successfully, something Nintendo failed to do with Wii U.

It's also ironic that I mentioned Okami since Super Mario 3D World was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2013 but it couldn't sell too many Wii U's.

There is no way to go but up.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Just wait until Mario Kart 8 comes out... It will put an end to Sony's dominance... If the PS4 gets ditched of course!
