Very true.

If others could truly get more out of last generation consoles then they can atleast try to challenge my doubts first. Like Pemalite said, I don't really expect it to match next generation but "far from tapped out" sounds like an overstatement. We've had too many game studios close down because of development costs and it sounds like they mostly blew it on trying to get some of the best performance. Most of the gains from this generation came from switching to deferred rendering.

I was really surprised how good Lara looked on my 360 with very few graphical glitches. The game was so special in so many ways but especially on a technical level.

I myself also find Uncharted 3 to look better, because I prefer bold colours. I believe TLOU uses more sophisticated animation and lighting solutions, however.
He's right, but the time was there for the new consoles anyway.

I'm not so sure about that. If the X1 and the PS4 flop what are we going to do ?
I mean, I think they could have squeezed a little more out of the N64 too. Of course, no matter how much that console was optimized, it would never have reached Playstation 2 levels. The PS3 and even the Xbox 360 could do more but they aren't going to reach PS4/Xbox One power. I guess the time is right for a new gen. Some people felt that it's way past time and wanted the new consoles a year or two ago. For me, I'm still okay with gen 7.
I'm tempted to impulse buy an Xbox One but no backwards compatibility is really an issue for me.
Most people seem to be disagreeing with him. They need to take a closer look at Metal Gear Solid V.

Don't even think about snatching an X1 yet. I would still stick with a 360 or PS3. The biggest games so far just happen to be on the last gen consoles too.
I think for some people to understand what he is talking about is to get in touch with the demoscene. Just take a look at what some people accomplished on C64 or Amiga systems - and in what size.
Game engines improve, rendering techniques improve, knowledge about hardware grows... This is why games on a special system always look better over years, the combination of all things I mentioned.
