if this analysis is true they don't make a profit per unit, as this is just the parts/assembly costs - you have to add retailer cut, transport costs, marketing costs and R&D costs per unit (and whatever costs I didn't think of) to that

They *could* be making a profit if you account for the world-wide average selling price, which is going to be higher than the $399.

Assembly costs wouldn't be that large, it's china after all.
And AMD did most of the R&D anyway, thanks to the PC, it's not like they sunk 100's of millions into any singular chip.

I doubt that, as in europe even sales tax/vat of ~20% (depends on the country) is included in the 400€.

It's a good thing the British pound is worth 60% more than the USD, isn't it?
That's right. If you converted the 400 pounds to USD it would be $640, give or take.

The Euro is 35% higher, peaks sometimes around 40-50%.

The Australian dollar however is 6% lower in value against the USD, yet sony charges an extra 37% more, our taxes aren't that obscene, other countries it's even more insane.

Tell me about it.

PS4 is USD 1800 here in Brazil, about 4,5 times higher. There is a lot of tax here, but not that much.

Nintendo managed to bring WiiU (also imported) for USD 800, 2,6 times higher. Which is around how much things get after taxes + retail.

Yah and I was "clearly" responding to the whole thread (you know, the OP is not the ONLY thing you should read in a "thread") and responding the a lot of people saying Sony was selling the PS4 at profit...

Jesus, now just sit down, take a breath and stop looking at every discussion with your Sony vs Microsoft war lens... I'm not attacking Sony and I do not care if they make profit out of it or not lol

Yes, the whole thread where people were talking about profits PER SINGLE HARDWARE componets, as in the cost of CPSU, GPU, RAM etc which is what this thread is about. You were the first to bring in labour, engineers, exectuves(...) stuff into the thread.

And you obvioulsy do care since you took your time to post your condescending, off topic post, so dont even try to spin that.

And thats pretty rich coming from you.  Compare your post/modertation history with mine, and then come back to talk about fanboy war lens.

You may say whatever you want if it makes you feel right but like it or not other people talked about profit and costs associated to the production before me in the thread... Now if you have a problem with me (which seems to be the case), just PM me but stop targeting my post like it was the only one talking about that.

Also please go ahead and take all the time you want to compare my posts and moderations history with yours (again, if this makes you happy I would not prevent that from happening :)), there is not need to look at that to see that you brought the Sony vs MS stuff into the thread when nobody (even myself) was talking about that.

Finally, if you have a problem with people talking about the profit in this thread instead of the building the PS4, I strongly recommand to just report it next time instead...

Wow, it's clear that Steve Jobes is gone as the ipad air is under $550.00.

I don't get why some gamers do not like consoles. As they should be selling it for upwards of $750. The subsidies help make them more affordable.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!
