Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 and Xbox - 70 and 80 million milestone

There is something curious about the recent announcement from Sony that the company had sold 80 million PS3s worldwide .

I searched and found the following data :

Microsoft announced that it had sold 70 million consoles on October 19, 2012:

This year , Microsoft announced that 80 million consoles was sold on October 17, 2013:

On the side of Sony , the announcement that the PS3 sold 70 million dated from November 4, 2012:

And reached the mark 80 million on November 2, 2013 :

Both ( Xbox 360 and PS3 ) sold 10 million in 363 days.

How about we compare this numbers with vgchartz numbers?

On November 3, 2012 , the PS3 was in the mark of 69,394,361 sold , on 02th November of this year the numbers are 79,931,511 , in other words , 10,537.150 PS3 sold in 364 days (one more than reported) .

But the Xbox 360 on October 20, 2012 was in the mark of 69,444,872 , on 19th of October of this year the numbers are 78,720,860 , in other words , 9,275.988 Xbox 360 sold in 364 days (one more than reported) .

Take note that I looked very similar to the dates reported , comprising only one day longer.

What is the surprise? Although both consoles have been distributed in equal numbers at the same time, we have that  PS3 sold 1,266.162 million units more , which does not seem right .

I know that the numbers given by companies are not exactly correct, but approximate, however this difference is certainly minimal. There is still the question of what a console can have more on the shelves than the other.

But still , it seems to me that the numbers do not close .

Just out of curiosity , another thing that does not close in my accounts is the couple PSP and PSVita . Sony this year ( Q4 2012 and Q1 + Q2 2013) shipped 2.7 million PSPs and Vitas ) and we have that on the 28th of September ( missing two days to close the period of 9 months) , the PS Vita and PSP already sold combined, respectively, 1,500.166 and 2,176.465 , thus summed reach 3,676.631 , which gives a difference of 976,631 , which is a lot , considering how little each one sells .

I can`t edit the OP? There is alot of language issues (English, obviously is not my primary language).

Well, vgchartz is a semi-reliable approximation that is often updated way after the fact to get more accurate numbers. So assuming they are a little off should be an expectation.

This is what I have been trying to say all along, something doesn´t add up and for a sales site it should be important. I am quite sure PS3 has the momentum but we should look at numbers, not what we want to be true. You have done a good job at showing that something does not add up :)

How can we disagree with OP ?

Good job putting it together like that. I've also suspected PS3 sales to be too high still, even with the last adjustments. I don't think it has passed 360 yet. And those PSP RotW sales have always looked high to me. I'll also take this opportunity to yet again say that the PS1 sales here are 2m too high. But alas, nothing much to do about it .

I think the numbers are considerable off this time and we already have big adjustments.

Got to agree with the OP on this one. Looks like they are pretty dead even at this moment and VGC certainly has this one wrong, no doubt about it.

All this means is PS nations gets to celebrate a second time when PS3 passes 360 lol. In all seriousness I've said this before but PS3 numbers have always looked to high for a console in it's 7th year (especially in Europe).
