Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony make or break this holiday?

This falls into the same problem Nintendo has. They are dependent on their consoles to make or break the companies at this point.

Sony will be OK, as the PS4 will be very successful this next 12-18 months for sure.
The difference being that Sony had to sell their two largest office buildings for about $2 Billion so that they could afford to launch the PS4 and Nintendo is sitting on about $14 Billion in cash.  If the PS4 does as well as the PS3 and the Wii U only does as well as the Gamecube, unless something big was to happen, Nintendo would still be sitting in a much healthier financial position.  If the Wii U stopped selling today and Nintendo re-structured, they would still be better off than Sony is.

Stop hating and start playing.

For the love of god don't let the ps4 be a second ps3. Then Sony is DONE.
But if the ps4 sells the same as the ps3 I believe sony's game division is going to have a nice profit. I don't think I can say the same about the wiiu.

Not looking good for Sony I'm afraid

Indeed.

But it are the TV and Mobile divisions that are really struggling. If they fail they can still go the panasonic way and let them go.

I think Panasonic is just dropping the Plasma TV line and not TVs all together. - http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/31/5050038/panasonic-plasma-tv-production-end

The turn around for Panasonic is pretty impressive though, their restructure has yielded great results so far.

Sony will be fine, PS4 will sell well, PS3 has made it to 80 million, people will upgrade to a PS4 over time, the launch is looking good, relax and enjoy the launch.

Game division is sony's second smallest division. The ps4 will do good, I don't doubt that.
But we're talking much bigger here

It wasnt because of the mobile division that they made a loss. It was also because of losses in gaming and sony pictures.

Sony highlighted this in there earnings report i believe.

the game division posted a loss because of PS4 manufacturing. High manufacturing without selling -> loss.

The movie industry is very volatile (or how you say it). You have to invest a lot of money in order to make money. And the entertainment bussiness is growing, especially the movie industry. So I have confidence in Sony Pictures, they just had a bad quarter
Article about the growing entertainment industry: http://www.bidnessetc.com/film-entertainment-industry-reel-profits/

Sony Pictures is like Sony Game division. You have to invest a lot of money into a blockbuster and hope people will love it and buy it. The only difference is that the game division still has the hardware, and this includes platform royalty with every new game sold. So they are safer if they have some blockbuster flops.

So this brings us back to sony TV and Mobile divisions. Like I said.. It's going to be an interesting holiday.

i dont understand your reply.

Sony themselves stated why they occured a loss. They mentioned Vita pricecut and certain movies doing badly. Im sure ps4 costs is up there as well. In any case all you have done is explained my post.

So how does that bring us back to Mobile and TV? Mobile has been doing quite well for Sony as of late. Probably due to the relative success of the Xperia Z. TV business has always been a problem but profits from other divisions which usually makes a profit (gaming, sony pictures), helps offset those loses.

So...for this particular quarter the reasons for the loss, as sony stated, was because of gaming and sony pictures. What's to argue here?

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

Their sales projection is the same as the original Wii U for the fiscal year with 5 million by end of March. I wonder if they'll manage? Or will they have a good holiday and a poor new year and Q1 as well?

I'm really, really excited about the two new consoles coming out, this site will be incredibly intriguing for a long time! We need this gen to start up for real now!

I expect the launch to be the same if not more than wiiu's launch and expect it to keep selling from there, Sony has a strong brand name with Playstation and I see the success of the ps3 trend to continue, all Sony's home consoles have sold well.

Sony/PlayStation doomed since 1994.

game division only posted 800million Yen loss, which is about an 8million $ loss. So very small.

The reason I go back to TV and Mobile is because those are the 2 divisions I can see sony struggling in.
