Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 will not support media servers, DLNA functionality

The PlayStation 4 will not support client functionality for media servers, Sony announced today in the Ultimate FAQ for the console on the PlayStation Blog.

The FAQ also confirms the Sony's next-gen console will not support DLNA devices for sharing and streaming videos and other media content from a home PC. Sony's PlayStation 3 does include DLNA support and allows users to access their PC's media from the console's dashboard.

Earlier this year, Microsoft noted that the Xbox One will not work as a Windows Media Center Extender, which would have allowed users to connect multiple devices running Windows. DLNA support, while possible on the Xbox 360, is still unconfirmed for the Xbox One.

Not really. I tried using it on PS3, and it never worked out as well as just connecting my PC to my TV.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I didn't use it much as my consoles are hooked up to my pc monitor but I hope it's just a case of them needing time to get it right and patch it in after. The no MP3's is the same. Features I never used but it is still nice to have them.

I'm slightly inconvenienced now.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Not only annoyed! This could be a dealbreaker for me, as I use the PS3 heavily as a DLNA device. Crap!

This, I stole from grandpa...It's called soap.

While it isn't amazing on PS3, I was hoping they would improve it on PS4. It was by backup solution given they don't seem to be supporting USB hard drives anymore.

So what, is that like me using Plex?

Will the PS4 not let me stream movies off my computer through plex?

or not even plex, just me setting up a server on my pc to stream through my wireless router to other devices.

I'm not annoyed. I didn't like it on the PS3 to be honest. Besides it can always be added through a firmware update later on.
