If only more games on Android/ iOS had controller support. At least on a dedicated handheld that is guarentueed. Otherwise, controller add-ons for phones are very niche products. Nvidia Shield or Xperia Play (as controls were built in) is what phone makers should do since gaming is a major force on phones now.

100's of games support it on android. All the games I listed above support a dedicated controller. They could benefit from providing a clear indication which games support a controller and which don't, but if its something you want to play with physical buttons, the odds are its supported.

It's a shame iOS/Android games are generally certain touch friendly genres or crap. Though just got a new Nexus 7 so will have a proper scout to see if there is much has come to change my mind on this. But the main reason for that was for emulators hooked up via HDMI and using a blue tooth pad. Certainly not practical as a portable gaming solution, but neither is my Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it's horrible to play games on unless it's something like Angry Birds or Solitaire.

That said, I currently have no interest playing games on my phone. So I'll keep my Vita and 3DS as long as they are pumping out more games I want to play.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Some core gamers really need to recognise mobile gaming of phones/tablets is a valid form of gaming that is eating (and will continue to eat) into the market of dedicated devices like 3DS and Vita. There will always be a market for those dedicated devices, but it'll never see the heights of the last portable gen.

On the other hand, iOS and Android are growing rapidly plus more sophisticated titles are now being released.

U do know that last gen was the biggest ever for the dedicated handheld.. (ds+psp) and that 3ds have sold more than the ds in the same time..The smartphone/tablet market has put mobilgames in the hands of billions.. but that don't have to be bad for a dedicated handheld.. some might see it as.. free comercials for the many people not used to playng games..

Look a litle futher.. And this is not bad for nintendo or sony.. they have the best games..  And i'm pretty sure that nintendo are thinking on the next handheld gen.. what should they do.. should they try to sell +100 million consoles (spend money and take the risk that is) or should they just go multi to a Billion casuals.. (and mayby make a android smartphone with  bottons)

Billions of new gamers can't in any way be bad for nintendo or sony..

I also want to say that there is a trend going on with licensed TV and Movie games.. they are shifting to mobile.. We had an Iron Man 1 and 2 game for the consoles but 3 went for Mobile.. Same with Thor, the Dark Knight Rises, Fast and Furious 6 and many more.. Those games are a magnet for more casual players and they are disappearing on consoles on a rapid rate.. And they are advertising these games more and more on TV..

People who think they ain't competing with handhelds are right.. they are also competing with consoles..

just look at Japan were mobile games > dedicated gaming

And we should be happy about that! Licensed games usually sucks ass!! Good ridens!!!!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Yep, and last gen was peak for dedicated handheld devices. But, do you really see 3DS doing the same numbers as DS in the long-term? You also have to remember that the DS hadn't had a price cut as the 3DS needed to gain traction.

If a casual player can play games on their mobile and/or tablet, they're going to do that over purchasing a dedicated handheld. Kids these days aren't introduced into gaming via hand-helds, but mobile and tablet hand me downs from their parents. Like I said, dedicated handhelds won't die, but to think mobiles/tablets won't eat into their market share is bizzare; they're already on a YOY decline. Consumers only have a limited amount of dispoasable cash and they're choosing to spend it on phones and tablets.

I agree though that this increase in gamers isn't necessarilly a bad thing for Nintendo and Sony (they can create Android/iOS apps in the same vein as Steam on PC if it comes to it), but it is bad for dedicated handhelds like 3DS and Vita.
