So that means that KZ only had 0.5GB in Feb. Damn. Oh wait sorry, it's Richard. Story is most likely bullshit.

RIF.

When the PS4 only had 4GB, apparently the OS only used 512MB of RAM.  That would have given a game 3.5GB to play in.

So you're saying that Sony added extra costs onto the console only to give developers an extra gig. 2 if the stars align. It may be true. But honestly it makes no sense. The xbone uses only 3 gigs for 3 OS's. And an indy game is already using 5GB. The whole thing just stinks of FUD.

Even if it's true it won't affect me since I will only play exclusives on it. PC for everything else but the article just seems crap. Similar to the 7 minute DVR feature.

EDIT: On second thought. If it's true, it really pisses me off if this is true. The console costs extra just so Sony can add crap to the OS. Go back to 4GB and drop the price please. And remove bloat from the OS.

This is probably Sony being cautious. Same case with MS.

They are probably not using this amount of RAM for the OS but gonna see how well they can optimize and what new features need to be implemented over the first year or two.

They will probably slowly allocate more and more to games.

The thing that they absolutely can't do though is give too much memory to games and then have no options later in the gen to add features which is exactly what happened with the PS3.

I was really expecting only 2gb to be used for the OS for both MS and Sony...seems like both have more ambitious plans for the OS. Either way i don't see this as a big deal...probably will have a very limited impact on games.

Still makes all the Sony fans who were using the whole 7GB > 5Gb argument look kinda silly now Even though that was never confirmed.

LOL, I was thinking it would be like 2gb for the OS but 3.5?

How the hell does it take up so much?

mulit-tasking?

The Xbox One is running 3 OSes and 2 Virtual Machines in 3GB.

Good news, 8GB was too much, developers would have gotten lazy and release unoptimized games

Seriously, we already have developers scratching their heads on what to do with amount they have now.

Interesting.

Didnt they also say that PS4 also only records 7m of gameplay?

Will wait for confirmation.

I think those memory restrictions are meant to be used with the 8GB dev kits but for the 'new' 8GB retail PS4.

It really makes sense that they needed 3.5GB for OS/debugging for a 8GB dev kits targeted at an 4BG PS4.

That would explain why they would 'give like candy' those oudated 8GB dev kits.

The proof that those documents are destined to 8GB dev kits, from eurogamer:
but the docs are clear that the extra RAM here is only available for application development, presumably in order to house debugging data

Alternatively it means that back in Feb, sony intended on a linear, bare bones OS and 3.5GB of Ram for developers.

Or most likely the story is a load of crap. Just like the 7 minutes of recording. Eurogamer are losing credibility fast. It's actually a shame. Leadbeater needs to be fired. Sony showed the OS back in Feb. Doubt they would have showed it if they were only about to expand it to 3.5GB. Also what happens during a game when the OS needs 3.5 instead of 2.5? The Game freezes? Goes to looking like crap?

yeah this reeks of BS.  Everything else (including devs and Cerny I believe) has pointed to 1gb so I do not see how it would suddenly more than triple.

So much for 7 gigs lol. All the sad faces this news has brought.

True 5.5 GBs is so low, imagine if it wasn't even half of that with slower ram lol that would be terrible, I guess we will have to settle on them ugly ass looking games next gen

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Still significant better. And we will most likely see a firmware update which increases the available ram. Yes, the 180 can do the same but it's not gddr5.

We will also most likely see a firmware update to fix the previous firmware update. Yes MS can do the same thing but they are not that stupid.

OT: well this is surprising, the ps4 only runs on OS and uses more ram than the one which has 3? Not a tech expert but isn’t that highly inefficient? Goes to show Sony should just stick to hardware and leave software to better companies.

And after RROD and now a more expensive but weaker console MS should leave hardware to better companies,

Wouldnt it be great if they just made a console together :P
